Plant Identification

These may be natives as they are in a remote area. However, they ARE next to a dirt road & may be 'Volunteers'

About 12-18 in. tall. The 'blossoms' appear to be a modified leaf, just a different color. They appear every year about this time. Any idea what they are?

Hey that's a new one on me. Was it in SLO co.?
From the web:
Indian Warrior is a hemiparasitic plant that is commonly associated with manzanitas in much of coastal California. Pedicularis densiflora can grow by it's little lonesome (but it will be little, yellow and lonesome), but is happy to attach to a manzanita or sometimes another chaparral plant like Chamise. A pretty little perennial that is near impossible to grow in a garden.

I have a friend who catalogs native flowering plants and their locations and bloom times. OP, can you say where they are?
