No Awards for Cox
updated: Feb 24, 2013, 9:15 PM

By Edhat Subscriber

Well, Cox Communication has managed to screw up one the biggest nights on tv as viewers suffered through the intermittent feed of ABC, totally destroying The Oscars. We were bitterly disappointed in my house, but can you imagine the reaction to the paying Oscar party-goers at Bacara? Or, the gatherings at Oscar parties around town?

Cox seems to get away with a lot. Where's the free market, choice? Am surprised there's locals accept their high prices and monopoly. Cox for internet access is the only choice we have in this neighborhood. Hope a generous rebate is extended to those who couldn't see the Oscars.

If you missed Dame Shirley Bassey (sp?) and Barbara Streisand trying to sing their signature songs ("Goldfinger"/"The Way We Were"), count yourself lucky. Man, oh, man. It was pitiful to hear them trying to hit those notes. Or, mostly, they didn't even try to hit the notes. The orchestra had been instructed to kind of drown them out, too. Sad. Really painful to watch. (I had to switch to other channels.)

The fun part was watching Kristen Stewart employ her usual "I'm too bored and brain dead" act, during her presentation. Gotta love her consistency.

Iron Man 2 and Terminator Salvation were much more entertaining. I flipped back and forth, rather than watch the interminable "thank the director, thank my cast, mumble, mumble I'm so humble" junk.

Robert Downey, Jr. and Sam Worthington were much more entertaining.

Our cable was fine too. Maybe the OP has a faulty cable line coming into the house. You should contact cox and get someone out there to check it. Could prevent your future frustration. We had no problems with Cox reception here on the lower Riviera. Have you called them?

I'm impressed by Seth MacFarlane's versatility. I believe that this is the first time that a host also was nominated for writing a best song.

My question is how they made "Ted" work. Robot? Very small person? Anybody know. Gary and Katherine on KLite are wondering, too.

2013-02-25 08:36 AM

OP, intermittent cable TV can be a sign of either a failing coax cable (street to your house, or in your house) or a failing cable modem. I once had water in my coax, problems went away when that section was replaced. Also, if you have a router, toggling power on both the modem and router can help.

Seth McFarlane is a talented guy IMO. And surely a better host than that Brit Ricky what's his name. I didn't care much for the closing "Losers" number, however.

Cox is not the only game in town. I have been very happy with Dish. I receive every channel including premium channels, and my bil is about 2/3 of what it would be for Cox. Don't believe Cox's hype, I never loose reception, not in rain nor wind nor sleet nor snow.
It's superior and less expensive.

I do still have Cox for Internet. Unfortunately they are the only game in town.

I have had no issues with Cox in the San Roque area. My reception has always been just fine and was last night as well. I enjoyed the Academy Awards but then I have a crush on Seth McFarlane so even though he missed on some of his jokes I still enjoyed him. I loved his song and dance routines. @301P I agree that Barbara Streisand wasn't as strong a singer as she used to be but I didn't mind because she was humble about it. But the Goldfinger singer (Bassey?) was terrible and not humble at all!

One's taste in humor (or talent assessment) is subjective, I'll admit, but Seth MacFarlane's lame, puerile, often sexist, trying-so-hard to be a "bad boy" just epitomizes the sort of general douchery that too often passes for humor these days. IMO, of course.

COMMENT 378367 agree helpful negative off topic

2013-02-25 08:51 AM

OP - Call Cox today and ask them to check the wiring outside your house, all the way up to the pole. Weather, birds, wear and tear could damage just your house. Also, have them come in and check the wiring in your house. Live near open areas? If so, a mouse or two could be the problem, they nibble. Lots of reasons why your house has poor reception but easy to spot why you have to suffer considering what you pay every month.

MacFarlane's humor may not suit everyone, but the man is hardly "talentless." In addition to creating a slew of hit animated shows (which, personally, I cannot stand), a huge hit movie ("Ted"), he has also a singer and musician who has performed both at the Royal Albert Theater and Carnegie Hall. He had song nominated for an Oscar. He is a voice-over genius. He sings, dances, writes, plays piano and several other instruments, has released an album of American favorites.

I may not enjoy his humor, but he has more talent in his right pinkie finger than most of us have in our entire body.

Cox is shaky out here (we do have the updated cable too)

I have to wonder how many of you who suggested to call Cox have had to actually deal with Cox on the phone (or even in person)? They blame EVERY one and EVERY thing for the service issues. The attitude of most the service people, a few have been good to deal with, is appalling. I have had to deal with them regularly do to my job. It seems their "customer service" is to hand you off to the next unlucky co-worker or tell you that for $XXX they can fix the problem or you need to buy $XXX which they happen to sell. (this after about an hour on the phone with them)

The TED bear with Mark Wahlberg was most likely a type of green screen projection. If you noticed at the beginning of the bit audience members were looking up at the large flat screens mounted up high on either side of the stage to be able to see the bear as we did at home.

To #362; Shirley Bassey is 76 yrs old and sang the hell out of her song. She has every right to feel proud about herself & her performance. We should all be so lucky to be as vibrant & active when we're in our mid-seventies. Cheers Shirley!

As for Seth, funny & talented guy, I have no issue with his irreverant jokes and comments. But then I'm not easily offended by off color or snarky jokes.

No cable problems on Eastside. The whole show seemed forced, Seth was off on his timing last night and his bits weren't long enough for him to put five or six quips together to round off the rough edges. I especially thought the abruptly loud-starting "Jaws" theme chosen to get award winners off-stage was just rude, i.e. Ben Affleck, blanched, wild-eyed and tongue-tied, trying desperately to get in, before "Jaws," what should have been a smiling, relaxed moment of glory winning "Best Picture." Just wrong. And choosing Jennifer Lawrence?! Hadn't anybody even SEEN the actresses in "Amour" and "Beasts of the Southern Wild"?

Whether this is a legitimate post or not, it seems like a new marketing campaign for corporations to post negative comments about their competitors then solicit feedback and have some helpful person post how much they like the competitor and how to get that service.

As social media contines to change our lives we need to be aware of product placement within it (like Pepsi all over "Back to the Future").

Bassey's "Goldfinger" was one of the highlights of the show. I was glad to see the producers quickly whisk off stage the lesser category winners and allow the major category winners plenty of time. I had intermittent cable for a while. Figuring it was the buried cable, I went to Cox and got two pieces of coax, a barrel, and bypassed the underground feed to the house. That fixed the problem, but it took them months to replace the underground cable. First guy simply didn't know what he was doing. Second guy found the conduit and replaced the coax.

BTW, Cox no longer gives out free coax. And they only have a limited selection of lengths at the store. When I needed a 60' piece for a new run, I got it on ebay.

The deal is monthly deal is meant to intise you, but they will screw you over if you have to break your two year contract. Then charge you almost $1000+ and also make you pay to send their equipment back. At least this was my experience, all because I had to move and the new place didnt allow the ugly dishes on the roofs. I say read the fine print before making the switch.

Yes, unfortunately it's true about the Cox price increase this March. Time Warner Sports Channel refused to distribute Cox it's channel unless it was bundled with their general channels. That means that all Cox users will pay for the increase not just Laker fans. Either Dish or Direct refused to go along with this but the other one did - I don't remember which one.
