Large Mushroom

Found this large purple mushroom on morning walk. The stem is nearly the size of
my wrist.

This is probably Boletus amygdalinus, a fairly common bolete in Santa Barbara, judging by the the reddish cap and stem. If so, it is mycorrhizal with live oak, so I'm presuming there was an oak nearby? It is lited as "edibility unknown" in most field guides. This specimen is old and beginning to decompose.
