Lobero Architectural Plans
updated: Feb 24, 2013, 12:15 PM

What is the real story on the exterior architectural and landscape plans for the Lobero? I saw a quote in a local real estate newspaper in which the Foundation Executive Director says, . . ."and we'll not only comply with the latest Americans With Disabilities Act accessibility requirements, but re-create from Smith's original designs, the Lobero Theatre's entry Esplanade."

What? You don't believe the local real estate spin or what the Foundation Executive Director said? Or just curious about the details?

Fewer seats with more legroom and stadium like seating, larger womens restrooms, air condtioning, better accessibility for people with disabilities and better heating. I didn't read about the landscaping. Good story about it in some non-real estate local newspaper.

What is proposed for the exterior of the Lobero is the replacement of the sloping brick paved entrance with a walled level terrace accessed by a flight of steps from Canon Perdido Street. The walls surrounding the terrace are to provide seating. The level terrace is to provide a level surface for a portable wine bar and food carts for use before performances and during intermission. The olive trees are to be replaced by carob trees. An ADA compliant ramp is to be installed New seating, bathrooms, and air conditioning are commendable. But why destroy the historic landmarked entrance, which has been a character defining landscape feature since 1924.

If they are going to make special accomodations for larger women isn't it incumbant upon them to make restrooms for larger men also?

Are the exterior arches at the entry to be taken away or changed? Is there an architectural rendering that can be shown on Edhat or elsewhere? How high are the walls and where will they be placed? I believe I saw that the wall would be midway up the lawn area breaking up this visual expanse. There are too many unanswered questions for this historic building and landscape. There needs to be community discussion. This is a major change particularly since it was a very short time ago that the interior was renovated with great care to keep the historic look and feel. Olive trees are historic for here. Carobs are not.

Have they actually determined the dimensions of the larger women that the restrooms are be enlarged for? It could mean that even if the women's restroom is expanded, fewer women will be accomodated because they will be larger and naturally will take up more space.

If similar accomodations are being considered to accept larger men, will that mean that the urinals will be installed higher on the wall, making it a real challenge for regular sized men to avail themselves of the new plumbing?

Ya start with hedges and end with potty jokes. Typical.

Yes, 432, it is typical, but Edhat is shutting down conversations that devolve into only snark. I appreciate that.
