Well well well. Now where's all those people complaining about how terrible the students are? What was it you all called them, "drunk idiots?" Well, those "idiots" seem to be doing pretty darn good.

I like UCSB but this is a ranking from a center at Leiden University in the Netherlands and the original story is from 2011. Doesn't seem like such a big deal to me.

480P, read the article: "the global ranking for research in science and technology" - aka professors and PhDs got the award, not the undergraduate education. UCSB isn't #7 for that, let's be realistic.

488 - exactly. Which makes it that much more competitive to get in. Thus, the students who are enrolled aren't exactly idiots.

At least the methodology makes more sense than US News. Does your school have a huge alumni base and donate tons of money? Congrats, you're a top 25 school!

I love the term "global honor." Straight out of the U.C. scripted press release, no doubt. Still, way to go on being a good school.

Good point, 481--why is this being posted on EdHat now? The link is dated in 2011.

615-Thanks for asking. Well, I was sort of having one of those "down" days and needed a little cheer. Nothing brightens the soul more than finding out that your school ranks among the best in the galaxy. That's why it was posted. Praise the internet gods!

I'm not sure that's how journalism works, 625.

With so much negative focus on the complex issues and problems in our state it is nice to see California well represented in the top 10. California was and still may be a pioneer frontier. People have come here to start fresh, escape the constraints of tradition, the dust bowls of the plains, or just seeking a vision of openness (perceived or actual), and I think it is in that spirt, the environment for innovation in technology has blossomed.
