Drake & Adrienne of the Santa Barbara Middle School Teen Press interview Mayor Helene Schneider after
she moderated Thursday night's panel on the cost of gun violence in Santa Barbara.
Do we have a gun violence problem in SB? I know someone was shot the other day. But it's the only one in years I can remember. Now a city like Chicago that has over 500 gun downs has a real problem. What a waste of time. Here in SB we have more of a stabbing problem.
Chicago also has some of the strictest gun laws in the country. Ban guns and only criminals will have them, since by definition criminals don't care about the law.
Not for civilians. Sorry. There is virtually no evidence that civilians who carry are any safer in the event of gun violence than those who don't. Especially if you keep a gun in the home.
And comparing people who are required to carry guns as a function of their job and people who have the option of owning a firearm is kind of a poor comparison.
Note: I'm not advocating for making guns illegal, I do believe in the Second Amendment. I just think there's a big difference between, say, a shotgun and an AR-15 or a Five-seveN.
Hermes you are right there is no evidence that it makes you safer because you become a statistic when you get murdered not when you stop it. So there are no statistics on how many crimes were stopped. As for your theory about not for civilians. I seem to remember a cop a few weeks ago in LA going nuts on his co workers. So to think that cops are not human too is just crazy. A badge does not mean you are immune to insanity. @596p Had the sandy hook mom been awake she could have stopped her son. He could have just slit her throat just as easy. You have to sleep at some point. A gun is a tool nothing more. In the wrong hands any tool can be deadly.
Hermes and 568, Actually there have been studies done about the self defense uses of private guns in the US. The numbers of "saves" are huge compared to deaths by private firearms. In most cases the gun didn't have to be fired.
I personally can say that I confronted a potential burglar and held him until the PD arrived only because I was armed. I didn't even have to take the gun out. But I would not have confronted him if I weren't armed.
