Silent Auction Bidding
updated: Feb 19, 2013, 9:18 AM

By Edhat Subscriber

I'm helping to get auction items for a local non-profit and I would like to know what Edhatters would bid on at a silent auction. For instance, would you be interested in a multi-package of dinners 2 or 4 at a local restaurant, a vacation get-away, art, jewelry, wine, items for your house or something for a Spring construction project?

Basically, what would you bid on and what would you plan on bidding?

Sports tickets, dinners. Hell my father a while back even won a certificate for Lasik eye surgery at a very discounted price from Dr. Shapiro.

When I go to these events I always bid on gift certificates to restaurants we like.

Getaway to Cambria, wine tasting w/transport, Amtrak passes and stay in San Diego, Catalina Express and stay in Catalina. Too bad my husband didn't see this prior to Valentine's Day :)

Restaurant gift certificates for sure and also local outings like boat rides, kayak rentals, horseback riding, etc. I would certainly also bid on nursery gift certificates and retail store gift cards.

I have some experience in this realm. Stick with items that appeal to the masses for better bidding. Everyone likes dining out. Vacations are a big hit. So are iPads. The more "mainstream" the more bids. Home improvement, wine, spring construction - is nice but won't be as popular. Although a whole-home house cleaning is awesome (I need one of those!)

Dinners or brunch for 2 - 4 at local restaurants, interesting local services like a guided hike to a special destination, a chef preparing dinner in your home for X number of people, spa stuff, framed original art by a known artist (local is better - think Ed Borien), tickets to concerts at the Bowl, overnight at El Cap in a yurt/tent....so much great stuff to do in and around SB.

Something worth my hard earned cash and the items listed so far don't meet that qualification. But that is just my opinion.

The opportunity to throw a bag of rotten tomatoes at one of our least favorite celebrities in town? All in good humor to raise money for a worthy cause, of course.

Something I'd like - a behind the scenes tour of the Four Seasons Biltmore, and maybe lunch at the Coral Casino.

oooo--A sunset flight with John JOJO or MAX! ususual once in a lfetime stuff appeals to me. If I need a dinner out, I'll pay for it. Ditto with household stuff.

Maybe an unusual wine flight?

We bought a framed, numbered lithograph of a famous artist at a charity event. This artwork was a donation from a private individual who didn't mind parting with it to benefit the silent auction. This charity asks their friends for these types of donations, e.g, nice art, upscale household accessories, etc. I like to bid on unusual items like this.

What age range are you planning on attracting to these silent bids? I have bid on (and won) many items over the years.

Let's say you want to lure the 40-60 crowd to open up their wallets. I would offer a spa day at The Oaks in Ojai. A wonderfully artsy bird bath to dress up a garden. A certificate to REI. Restaurant packages galore. An unusual sculpture, preferably metal and of a dog. A Metro Theatre coupon booklet. Tickets to Lotusland. Certificates for massages, facials. A gift card to Island Seed & Feed (they may donate that, if you ask nicely). Lessons in mosaic (a trendy thing to do right now). Tickets to J. Paul Getty museum.

How about home improvement? A certificate for two hours' worth of house repair from Edward the Fixit Guy. A gift card for Home Improvement Center or OSH. A certificate to have a custom framing done for some photo or work of art. A certificate to have a family photo taken.

A whale watching package for two or four. An overnight stay at Upham Hotel, Biltmore, Miramonte. A season's worth of SB Symphony. A season's worth of tickets to the Granada.

Anything dog: A gift card to Healthy Pet. A certificate to have your pet's photo taken professionally. Or maybe even a watercolor or oil painting of your family pet. A dog spa treatment.

Tickets to ski Mammoth. Tickets to Disneyland. Some latest mystery novel, written by and signed by the author. Neal Graffy's latest book on Santa Barbara, signed. The iPad idea is good.

Have at least two pieces of really nice jewelry. Earrings. A necklace. Something from Williams Sonoma or Sur Le Table, such as a beautiful pasta bowl or basket of mixed goodies in jars and tins.

People do seem to like baskets with lots of different items in them. I would definitely put out at least one basket that is loaded with chocolates from some local candy shop.

Ask a few of your friends what they have bid on in the past.

Have fun. I hope you make loa... [ more ]

Stuff related to grandkids, ie, passes to Sea Center, tickets to Fun Zone in Ventura, packages of books and related toys along a theme, special classes with grandkids, annual passes or memberships to area educational institutions, roundtrip train ride to Carp inc breakfast at Esau's.
For adults, gift certificates to area excursions: Islands, Cachuma wildlife tour, a private morning or afternoon for 4 with a local expert (art, wildlife, botany, history, photography). Lunch with a city council member. Gift certificate for a computer lesson or clean up, mac or pc.

Nice comments with plenty of suggestions. The poster has plenty of help now getting started on putting the silent auction together. Just proves, Edhat is the place to look for answers!

I would just like to add that sometimes people with money do not have enough time or inclination to bake or cook. Homecooked meals delivered to your home is a great auction bid item.
