Does anyone know what kind of jelly fish this is? There were dozens of
them washed up at Butterfly Beach the other day. They are about 2-3"
inches wide, pretty thick, and cup shaped. This one is right side up. I don't
recall seeing them before.
Come to think of it, I have not seen sailors-by-the-wind in a long time.

I think it's a type of salp. There were 1,000s of these on Ellwood beach last year, in February. Handle them with care, as they do have tentacles (retracted).

OP here. Why are so many of you mean? Do you not care that you hurt feelings? If you don't like peoples' questions, or can't be helpful, go let the air out of tires, play ding dong ditch, or t.p. someone's yard. Because your comments are about as constructive and kind as those activities. I honestly did not know how to look up these interesting ocean life creatures. So I asked. Deal.

009, I like you picture and the post; I'm going down to my neighborhood beach to see if any are there. Where can you get answers if not on edhat? Snarky commenters don't care if they hurt feelings, they don't feel good about themselves so fluff their feathers with nasty comments; I guess it makes them think they're big wheels instead of little spokes. Don't take it to heart, just feel sorry for them. I've noticed they aren't paid members.
