At about 12:40 pm while I was at lunch, there were a few police cars speeding to
the area in front of Trader Joes on Calle Real. Anyone know what's up?

765p, read it again. It's Calle Real, not Milpas. They have a normal parking lot there.

Not many people know this, but the founder of TJs used to be a doll house maker. His parking lots pay homage to the 2/3 scale premise of doll house design.

The parking lot on Milpas was there long before TJ's and is a piece of cake compared to the TJ's lot on De La Vina.

Somewhat unrelated: TJ's on DLV has the worst parking lot ever. Ever.

TJ is notorious for choosing existing sites that have tiny parking lots AND for building new (ie ground up) stores with bad parking. This suggests that it's no accident that TJs always has bad parking lots, but rather that it's a conscious, corporate decision. Probably, the idea is to make it feel like TJs is "always full" of customers. Plus if it's harder to park, people might buy more stuff on the theory that they don't want to have to make a second trip (and find parking again).

784, you can park anywhere along that entire strip mall and go to TJs! Crazy that people can't walk two feet further than the entrance to a store without being angry about it.

It's really easy to avoid the parking madness at TJ's. 1. Avoid the swarms of others shoppers by picking the off hours to go. 2. Don't shop there. 3. Ride a motorcycle. Simple.... don't whine about it.... do something constructive.

812P - As earlier stated it was an ACCIDENT. Two people injured. Ambulances took them to Cottage Hosp. And it was in front of Denny's, not TJs.

798, actually, it's not that they have a nefarious plan. They are a very small store (think of the sq footage of your average Albertson's, Vons or Whole Foods, even in a small town and compare.) They go into areas where they are in strip malls, where they share parking with other stores. So, naturally, the parking will be fuller than a larger grocery or mega store. Sometimes, conspiracies aren't all they are cracked up to be, they are simply a matter of appropriately sized real estate and relative parking lot sizes.

781-I'm not talking about having to park right in front of Tj'.s In fact, I do park quite a distance away and walk to all the stores on the strip. But the entire layout of the lot is crazy - too-small spaces (and I have a small car), and straight up parking stripes so one can't angle their car in but has to swing wide in order to get in a space -often driving directly at another car doing the same thing in the opposite direction.

The Arroyo Grande TJ actually has decent parking, but usually some store nearby is unoccupied. If all were full-- back to normal for TJ! Stupidest parking lot for TJ? Right next to Costco in Santa Maria. Talk about baaaad parking & crazed drivers.

The parking lot for that entire Calle Real strip mall is ridiculous and dangerous. If it had been designed by a qualified traffic engineer rather than a maximize profit developer, they would know you never should design a parking lot where cars have to back up at each other from both sides and into an active traffic aisle insuring multiple distractions, vision obscurements and resulting in numerous accidents. In addition, to allow table seating within a few feet of the front of vehicles, particularly the West side which slopes down toward the walkways with only a 3" curb and no physical barriers is an invitation to have someone flattened by and errant driver who's foot either "slipped" from the brake to the gas or who chose the wrong pedal or the wrong gear. It already happened across the street on the East side.

Hello People, TJ's on Calle Real is in a Towbes development. Towbes is the culprit for parking size. Get a grip, use your head and drive and park safely.
