I'm writing you with excitement over a local competitive cheer dance and fitness team, for girls' 4-14 years
old. Over the weekend Santa Barbara Elite competed at with Sharp International at the Convention Center
down in San Diego, CA. The teams took home three 2nd place trophies in (Jr. Cheer/Elementary Cheer/ and
Hip Hop Dance) plus they earned the judges award for Showmanship. These girls work very hard and are
from local schools all over Santa Barbara. Candice Pipersburg is the advisor of the groups.

Congrats to the team. To those who think this will get them nowhere in life - It gets the same thing as any sports competition does - possible college scholarships - and that definitely does get you somewhere in life! To those who think this is not "a sport" - try it! It should really be called team gymnastics.

Wow, some really sexist comments here. Most boys' sports in HS and college won't get them anywhere either, but it will keep them fit, teach them about being a team and also help them in ways that some people here just don't understand....being better, more well rounded and less rude!

Congrats to these girls. I know how hard they work. To any parent with kids who want to do this...I say, this is so hard on your daughter's body. I have 2 daughters, (28 and 30), who are still dealing with injuries from this sport!

835P. Yes. That's the problem with any kind of sport that works your body to this extent. Gymnastics, football, BMX, cycling, tennis---just about any sport you can think of (maybe not golf? water ballet?) has the potential to leave you with chronic pain. Sometimes this pain doesn't show up until you're older. It's the repetition that often does the most damage. However, I think working out like this is healthy in so many ways---mentally and physically. Parents just have to be wary and vigilant. Don't let your kids overdo it.
