Freeway Brush Fires

Sunday was a busy day for local firefighters, responding to reports of
four separate freeway brush fires.
As reported by Roger the Scanner Guy, just after 1:30 p.m. a small fire
began on the southbound side of the 101, just south of the Los Patos
Way exit. While firefighters were on scene fighting that fire, another fire
approximately 100' further south began, causing firefighters to turn their
attention to the larger fire. Both freeway fires were in the vicinity of the
railroad tracks, near an apartment building behind the Cafe Del Sol.
SBFD dispatched several engines, as did Montecito Fire, however
SBFD was able to quickly extinguish both fires before Montecito's
arrival. Within minutes, two additional freeway fires were reported - one
near the Sheffield Drive exit, the other near Castillo Street. Firefighters
responded to these fires, and according to Roger's Code Red reports,
the third and fourth fires were quickly put out.
Traffic along Coast Village Road was a nightmare for those traveling
southbound, as many motorists exited the 101 at the Los Patos and
Coast Village Road exits. To aid firefighters in their efforts, the CHP
closed the Los Patos exit, which added to the heavy traffic along the
surface streets, and contributed to the massive traffic jam along Coast
Village Road.
