I hope he recovers. Until I have walked in his shoes, I cannot begin to imagine what he was thinking.

So, so sad.

Addiction is so awful. I think many of us have addictions to things we don't even realize, not just alcohol and drugs. It's just that our "things" don't kill us in this exact way.

What happened to "anonymity at the level of press......."

The LIghthouse Foundation is not AA. I wish the best for Steven Hartman, who started the local Lighthouse in 2001 and whose name is on the foundation brochure.

He's a scam artist who preyed on the weak and used his privilege to leverage those at the mercy of his position as the founder of lighthouse. He used that position to take advantage of parolees, and women. I have known MANY of his ill-placed victims. I had someone new to recovery confess that the previous night, they had been drinking with him at a local bar. Another moved out of lighthouse to avoid having their parole violated for drugs being used in his room by another. So, don't feed me this scrap about how great a guy he was. He was taking advantage of the desperation of those needing a hand up. Heck, he furnished his houses with junk that he would find sitting on the curb. Pathetic.

You might want to check with some of the previous tenants and Cottage Hospital out patient program before you turn this guy into some kind of saint.

Lighthouse is well known in the "recovery" comm'ty.
Most "sober living" facilities in this town (there are MANY) are SCAMS. A few guys run them, supp'sdly recover'g addicts themselves. They pack 'em in like sardines. Evn the best 1 for women is a 3 bdrm 2 ba w/conv'td attic. ELEVEN beds, always full. Each wmn (excpt the mgr, paid in "free rent") pays $150 / wk. Do the math. That's $1500 / wk. Over $6000 / mo. Plus penalties. If you miss a meet'g, evn if you worked (legit reason), you pay extra 20. Not AA meetgs. House meetgs, meditation grps, etc. Resid'ts are NOT protected by tenants rights laws. There's NO oversight holding "sober living" acc'table to any standards whatsoever.
If anyone's lookin for grt way to scam sick and helpless people, make tons easy money, rent a house. Fill with people "working on" sobriety. There's a const. supply from LA. SB is WELL KNOWN as a place for "cheap" housing & free servcs $ addicts "working on recovery".

It's quite a lot of stress for a person with a deep history of addictions, to maintain psychologically and physically while dealing with all the often sad complexities of an institution like the Lighthouse. Best of luck to Mr. Hartman.

It will be interesting to see how many do gooder/bleeding heart types wil rationalize and make excuses for those who make a businesss out of drug addiction and "homeless" issues. It is a disgusting feature of how far the human psyche has come in ways to worship the almighty dollar beside becoming a politician.

My son would have been dead from addiction if not for Steve Hartman and the Lighthouse Foundation. Steve personally supervised his recovery and showed this family how it was a family disease. This enabled my son to recover 100% from heroin addiction, after everyone else had given up on him in Santa Barbara. His methods of treatment at times weren't strictly from the AA book, but again without Steve my son would be dead as no other recovery house in Santa Barbara would touch him.
My son is now married with two children and sober for 5 years. I morn the loss of Steve as a brother and friend. I have experienced first hand the countless lives he has saved from addiction. Not everyone is perfect including myself. Steve Hartman's primary purpose with Lighthouse with his heart and soul was for the recovery of fellow addicts and alcoholics including his own.

Not a fan. There was the murder in 2008, and then several individuals there that say there is no sober living going on. Worst case was an older guy that was remanded there for heroin for 8 months. 14 months later, he was still there, but on the verge of being remanded back into custody. Though he had stayed sober, he couldn't get a job, and they wouldn't clear him out of remand until he paid all his back rent, even though he turned over his food stamps to them. It was straight extortion. People were using drugs in the facility like crazy, and some dealing was going on in the alley behind them We'd see some of their 'clients' smoke stuff on the corner by the freeway, across from the pre-school, and then shuffle back in for 'counseling'. Total scam.

Sure the man made many mistakes and was battling addiction. I hear alot of people here saying he was running a scam and he was a bad person. Whatever u may think you know about him or heard about him the reality is he's in a coma. Does he deserve to die even if all the rumors are true. I think not

No longer in a coma, he passed (taken off the machine) Sunday night. RIP Steve/Stevo.

I say poor Steve because it’s a travesty, when someone dies of this disease. He had his faults but anyone who runs or lives in sober living has faults. I can just pray for him and hope I don’t fall to that kind of death. Those of you who say negative things about him have faults also, you’re talking about a dead person. God bless Steve
