Scanner Reports 2-18-13
updated: Feb 18, 2013, 7:00 AM

By Roger the Scanner Guy

Monday hopefully it won't be a rainy day Monday, SNOT yet anyway. I have started walking again, I'm getting too damn big I need to lose weight move around a little bit. I used to walk all the time 10 or 15 miles a day easy, now it's HELL just doing a mile or two. On Saturday I walked to Chapala Market and back incentive for a Big Guy that Loves Food. The walk was pretty serene not really sure what time it was other than morning, maybe around 8am. I noticed Casa Esperanza's "Step Up" program people cleaning up the streets all the way to Gutierrez and Milpas WOW that is dedication good for them! A few blocks up a white Chevy truck pulled up in front of me and stopped there was a Yankees sticker in the back window. I hate the Yankees they are always winning, that and I'm from the Chicago area. I thought it was a Police Officer but it was my good friend Alan asking me what I was doing in his HOOD. I told him that I was walking for exercise but failed to mention I was heading to Chapala Market to score some onions at .49 cents a pound. I didn't want anyone else to get to the onions before I did. Alan mentioned the "Step Up" Program people and I commented that I was kinda shocked they went all the way to Gutierrez. We spoke a few more moments and went our separate ways.

I got to the market scored some good food and started back. I was walking on the West Side of Milpas heading south when I encountered Spandex Boy on a bicycle with his Sweetie Pie in the middle of Haley as if they were driving a vehicle. As I crossed the street Spandex Boy said something about "Stink Holes" I think he was talking about Milpas street but he said it when I was crossing the street. I said something back as I kept walking he wasn't worth what I was thinking of doing with my cane. I got to the next block. According to the right of way on the pole at Gutierrez and Milpas I had 6 seconds to cross Gutierrez Street as I entered the crosswalk I noticed there were two vehicles in the turning lane waiting for me to cross a gentleman in a red Ford Explorer, and a woman in a grey VW most likely a piss ant. The woman was leaning on the horn a bit trying to get the man in the Ford Explorer to run me down; she was totally nuts totally enraged inside her little piss ant. The man was not moving for her he totally yielded to my right of way and in fact waited till the light was changing to take off leaving the Raging Maniac stranded at the light. I busted up laughing; I could hear her screaming all the way down the street. There are some real nuts out there driving vehicles.

The walk was so enjoyable Saturday morning, I did it Sunday also this time I went to Fresh and Easy. On the way back I stopped to check out a vacant home in the 100 Block of North Milpas I have heard the address on the scanner before it's a Squatters Paradise although it looked like a gutted home to me most likely infested with rats, stinking of Urine and Poopy. The front of the place had curtains on the windows the back was boarded up. I was afraid to go into the back yard but I did and was surprised to see an open basement of sorts I did not enter it was very dark it didn't look like it had a floor. There was broken glass and other debris in there, there was a garage but once you entered the back yard looked more like another living space. I heard something coming from there so I left but before I did noticed what looked like a small spill of blood on some wood in the driveway. More fires on the West Side it's a good thing there are some alert residents over there. 3 Fires Saturday evening they seemed to go pretty quick I'm not a fire investigator but it seems to me there might be more than one firebug. Around the same time there was a report of a rock thrower in the Carrillo Underpass. They said something about a homeless camp in the area personally I'd be surprised if a homeless person is starting the fires. I think a homeless man was questioned, someone who was sleeping in the area.

Someone mentioned something not too long ago about Homeless people camping in Montecito. They are there and have been for some time, along the RR Tracks and the Freeway lately I have been hearing of squatters. Over the weekend I heard of a group of Squatters in a home on Olive Mill smoking meth. A couple weeks back I heard of a squatter that had all the furnishings of home in someone's driveway. Bed, table, chair, TV. The driveway squatter was on East Valley Road I wonder how crazy it's going to get before something is done.

Perhaps it's this gray weather, or maybe it's my imagination, but it seems like there's not a lot of love in the air today.

@615 Bicycles are NOT vehicles, Bicycles are not registered, not insured, riders are not licensed if they were there would be more accountablity. There is no accountablity on bicycle riders who offend the LAW more than any one else..They ride up sidewalks, down sidewalks, run stop lights, signs, ride the wrong way aganist traffic. They are very selfish. They do not yield for pedestrians or anyone else for that matter..Personally I think Bicycle riders should have to go through the DMV and get licensed and I think maybe the Govenator should know this..Bicycles are not vehicles yet.

Hope not - I agree with the poster who said they don't like paying to be subjectively censored! One rule for some, not for others, etc etc... And as for the word FART...!

Roger, would you really feel any differently about Spandex Boy if he were DMV licensed, registered, and insured? Though the DMV doesn't offer a bicycling-specific license, I am in fact licensed to drive, and to earn this license I had to pass their test of my knowledge of the vehicle code, which does cover all of the statutes applicable to bicycles.

BTW I just recently became a paid subscriber of Edhat. If the moderators continue to tolerate Roger's intemperate postings I will likely not re-up when the time comes.

@SECCO: Wow you ask the question in such a kind manner why would you leave such a hostile add on..Actually I don't care what any bicyclists do because I'm going to fill my card on my cell phone and every single time I see a bicyclist break the law I'm going tocall the police and sign a complaint. I'll even show up in court as a witness. I will get one of those cute little camera phones too.. I don't think it's right for bicyclists to break the traffic laws then call people names and try to run people down on the sidewalk. I'm sure you don't break any of these laws...As far as your added comment please let me know also so I can pay for someones membership out of my pocket..Good Day and I'm extremely sorry if you were injured by my words...

I like Roger. I'm glad he's here. If I pay for another subscription, it will be, in very large part, due to Roger's posts. I'm a fairly new subscriber that refused to pay for years due to the mean-spiritedness of regulars that posted and commented. Roger's life experiences have shaped a person who's remarkable writings I'd never see, otherwise. His posts range from mildy spicy to szechuan heat. I don't know him and we don't appear to agree on some issues but he comes across as a man with a good heart. That still goes a very long way in this world.

My Smarter Half and I often will look for updates here before heading somewhere in case the siren we just heard is headed for an area where we'll be driving to or through. I was saved a trip to Costco on the 12th. I loved not having to drive from downtown to Goleta during drivetime traffic.

We were sitting in traffic several hours outside of town yesterday when I read the little dustup that occurred on this thread. I hadn't felt like laughing about anything for a couple of days due to the death of our pet but I sure got a couple of giggle-snorts yesterday from reading Roger's retorts. And, I felt a little better after laughing.

I hope Roger's work will continue to flow unfettered despite the bleats of the ridiculously and dramatically offended.

78P: Don't know about your specific question, but obviously writing "eat me" backwards _is_ permitted on a regular basis, at least for some. Personally, I'm fine with some of the snark, another frequent complaint, but I find the the increasingly belligerent, overly defensive and relentlessly juvenile comments to be very off-putting (to put it mildly) and it will be a factor in my decision as to resubscribe or not.
