Missing Mom's
updated: Feb 17, 2013, 6:49 PM
By Edhat Subscriber
I read with sadness that Mom's is no
more on your pages. I've been in LA
for a long time, but worked in Oxnard
and would drive up to SB to relax and
enjoy a great meal at Mom's. Can you
share with me what happened to the
owners... your page mentioned a
"fragility" but nothing else. The
passing of Mom's, the Miramar Beach
Hotel... time does fly.

Time flies and the charm of Santa Barbara is being decimated faster than the speed of light. Look at what is happening to our Funk Zone. A major travesty, if ever there was one.

Mom's has been closed at least 30 years, I would guess. Why is this question coming up now?

True, Mom's has been closed for at least a decade. Time does fly.

At least Arnoldi's has survived and seems to be doing OK.

It was the flood that was given as the reason for the restaurants nail in the coffin....a huge loss for SB. Seems like winter of 1995.

If I recall correctly, Mom's closed after her death and the siblings elected to not continue the restaurant business. That's kind of vague in my memory but it was something along those lines. Made a big hole in our restaurant list.

I agree with InQuiring Mind. I have missed it but understand. This made me realize it's been a long time since we were at Arnoldis.

Mom's has been closed for some time now. The property has been developed by the Transition House and now is the location of apartments for transitional housing for homeless families who are working to regain their lives.

I heard that they did a big re-finance of the building, expanded and remodeled. Unfortunately, their business volume couldn't meet the huge debt incurred and they ended up having to close. Sad, I loved the place.

Declining business. Death of the key family members including "Mom" who made the restaurant popular during the second world war and post war period. The closure and destruction of the Dodger organization's nearby Minor league baseball stadium and AA farm team (now turned into the City Storage yard) and a City Council seeking to expand its physical needs including the creation of controversial subsidized housing elements in that neighborhood so popular with recent City Councils.

The knee-jerk first post, which is completely false (but this is Edhat so who cares?), is the reason I'll never again be a paid Edhat subscriber. Ranting lies and lying rants by negative, trash-talking right-wing lurkers rule the roost on all but puppy and kitten and flower and bug and sunrise-sunset pictures, and even some of those get trashed. I've had it. This is one less cesspool in which I'll wallow.
