Does anyone know what happened to the new El Encanto sign? It was up for about a minute
the other day and now the old sign with the graffiti is back..

I care - El Encanto, even if I won't be able to afford it, will enhance our city. Am curious why there's been very little information about the progress or opening of this hotel. Also, details about the new improvements.

Do you mean the sign by the Mission, or the neon sign in front of the hotel?

I could care less. I know where it is and what it is. Maybe the sign is out for restoration?? What I do care about is whether or not they will serve a good Sunday breakfast with a view like they had before. I spent many Sunday's up there with an omelet, coffee and good friends.

I think you answered your own question. Why leave a pristine sign to get tagged when you can hang the old junk out there for a month until the opening. Business people are much smarter than our local leaders and know that this town is not as safe as it is sold to them, so why risk your expensive new sign more than necessary.

I hope the sign is in a place where the tourists can see it. That's not exactly an easy place to find if you aren't familiar with the area. I personally don't care for the location, I feel like I am in a private neighborhood, which I am, and away from the beach and town where most tourists prefer to be. It will be interesting to see what their hotel rates are going to be.

El Encano starts at $375 compared to Biltmore at $475 and San Ysidro Ranch at $675. Can get a little cheaper rate at the Ranch midweek.

Actually @060P, I just got home from a 40 mile bike ride along the coast along with 5 other cyclists. Now I am going to hike Cold Springs and pick up trash as I go. All so I can enjoy a nice relaxing Sunday breakfast... work hard, relax hard.

073, the beach and town where most tourists prefer to be? I would say that is an oversimplified generalization. Many people now who travel--not all "tourists" in the sense you mean--want an out of the way, private, discrete neighborhood feel to their accommodations. Thus the success of VRBO and sites like it. Many folks like to get the feel of a community away from the souvenir t-shirts, noise, crowds, and in the case of our town, homeless people who harass them.

105P So true, we only stay in hotels when we can't get a VRBO or if it's only a day or two. Having said that most people would probably only stay at El Encanto for a day or two but they are people that would also stay at San Ysidro Ranch and if you look at the price point I listed previosly I'm guessing El Encanto will do just fine.

What a shame if someone already vandalized the new sign. I think there should be a vigilante volunteer group of insomniacs that patrol in the wee hours of the morning. I bet these non-sleepers could help by calling in a lot of nefarious activity.

My guess would be that they forgot to get a sign permit, someone at the city noticed and told them to rectify the situation.

If memory serves me (and sometimes it fails) I think the city required or at least requested that the old signs be kept. They are considered historical.

I live in the neighborhood and love the old signs. I also love going to the El Encanto for breakfast at around 7:30 a.m. on a weekend morning. I had the place, and the views, to myself.....

If you mean the sign at the APS "Y" there was a team of men working on it this week and it was lit on Friday when I came home. It was nice to see it "back". There is still graffiti on it and it could use a coat of paint but I'm sure that will come. As members of the Riviera Association we got an "invitation" to a pre- opening cocktail party on March 15th. The only kicker is that it's $30.00 per couple. After the years of construction trucks racing up and down APS right past our house (Yes, I know there ARE other projects.) I'd have thought they would have comped us or, at least, have made this a charity event. I checked rates and found them to be closer to $500 to $1,000 a night.

CATNET4-- Right you are. I just re-read the invitation. I would have been nice if it were made clearer that this is a benefit for the Riviera Association. The invitation says that the host is the El Encanto which would lead one to believe that the $30.00pp is going to them through the Association. My thought was that the hotel might host an open house for neighbors. We were, on at least three occasions, offered lunch downtown when they were going through the various permitting processes.

El Encanto's new signage was fitted and sized and it will be ready for installation in a few weeks. We are looking forward to unveiling it to our community. Laura McIver, General Manager, El Encanto
