Wobbly Windows
updated: Feb 14, 2013, 3:06 PM

By Edhat Subscriber

My windows wobbled at 3:03 pm. Is it an earthquake or more exercises at Vandenberg?

Another Edhat Subscriber reported: "I'm in the Mission Canyon area and have heard two deep rumbling/sonic boom sounds in the last five minutes. Anyone know what's up?"

Mission canyon area, too. Rattling windows! We first thought truck, then earthquake. Didn't even think of vandenberg!

I felt it here on E. Montecito too. Felt like a tiny quake to me.

154 and Cathedral Oaks area, too. Felt like Vandenberg playing around again.

Would it kill them to keep people informed of jet and rocket schedules? I am getting sick of being frightened by these sounds. Definitely crosses the line of mere annoyance or occasional anomaly.

Another round just happened. I remember after the last big bout of these reading somewhere that Edwards? was conducting tests regarding the public response to these rumblings.... Can't remember where I read that. I had been calling Vandenburg and Edwards AFBs when they started to really ramp up a few years ago, but after receiving no explanation each time, realized the calls were pretty pointless. If you look up the Mt. Abel seismograph, most of these rumblings registered. You can look up previous posts on Edhat either under rumblings or my favorite 'air of booms'.

There are numerous websites (and apps) that you can use to have alerts sent to you. I'd post links, but since I'm not a paid member here I'd get Nanny'd for it.

I am beginning to wonder if this has any thing to do with the acoustic testing the navy is doing off our coast. They publicly acknowledged that the testing can loud enough and intense enough to be mistaken for earthquakes and can even be heard onshore. Otherwise, I can't think of any sonic booms that can be heard SIMULTANEOUSLY over a 600 mile range. Sound takes time to travel. And aviation sonic booms take time to travel just like all other sound waves.

If this freaks you out, better start getting mentally and physically prepared for the big one now. So cal hasn't had a significant quake in years.
