I'm making a romantic homemade Valentine's Day dinner but I won't have enough time to make dessert. Which downtown restaurant provides a to-go dessert that I can pick up early Thursday evening? I called Palace Grill about their souffle but they won't be able to do it.

Not sure about restaurants (and looking forward to reading others comments!), but you could always pick something up from a bakery or Whole Foods (their desserts always look yummy) or some place like that. Did you want something specific, like a souffle, or just any fancy/decadent/special dessert?

The bakery counter at Gelsons has yummy dessert! There is also Crushcakes, they have yummy cupcakes! Or, if you don't have time to make something fancy, maybe get ice cream and fixings to make sundaes at home!

I've called my favorite restaurant and asked for deserts to go before and they've all been happy to accommodate. Valentine's might be tough for this though because many only offer limited, special menus. If you have time you can always make something. Little chocolate lava cakes are actually easy to make, but a bit messy. So yummy though!!

Coconut cake from Montecito Cafe or its sister restaurant Jane - terrific, light, not cloyingly sweet, creamy - unusually good.

Chocolate dipped strawberries. Whole Foods has them or if you are at all handy in the kitchen, make your own. Dip in dark chocolate (Whole Foods has bulk for melting by their cheese dept) and drizzle with white chocolate. That would be my choice for Valentine's day desert. Supplement iit with some petite fours or other small treats.

Andersen's Danish Bakery & Restaurant on State st. near Figueroa. Oh no, now I'm going to have to there. No bakery in town matches Andersen's for European quality confection perfection. Look at the website and you can see for yourself.

Here are my 3 favorite "I'd go to war to defend my right to eat" desserts in town: 1. Louie's on Sola/De La Vina. Peanut Butter Pie. Don't know when they open for dinner. Call first. 2. Lazy Acres/Mesa: Whiteout Cake 3. Stella Mare's/Bird Refuge: Lemon Cake. Call first to make sure they still make it. It's been awhile since I've been there. (This is the most sophisticated/romantic one on my list, btw)

Just bought a "Karat" cake from Trader Joe's today and it was better than expected - light, not too sweet, reasonably priced. Simply Pies may be pretty good, just out of my price range. Lemon bars at Lazy Acres good.

Very fond memories of Brigitte's /Opal's nut (hazelnut? walnut?) and chocolate confection... Opal is good but Brigitte's was better -- oh their bread! Got a nut chocolate tart or whatever it's properly called for Tuirkey Day years ago. Sorry, just reminiscing. I too would to to Anderson's or Fresco. Possibly Reynaud's, but I don't want to start that battle again. :-)
