Goodness...with all the accidents on the 101 yesterday (I never run errands after work but had to), and another train track killing? Seems people are dying left and right around town.

What on earth is going on with SB railroads these days???

this is being investigated as a possible suicide. if that's the case, you can't really blame the train.

I saw the train halted while driving into Carpinteria last night, hoping it wasn't an accident. I live in carp and the trains were blasting their horns pretty loudly after that. I'm sorry for whoever was killed. I'm terribly sorry for the conductor. Please post respectful comments.

Many/Most of these 'accidents' are suicides. So sad that we don't have a more dignified way to exit this world when absolutely needed.

I wish suicide were legal so that people wouldn't have to subject conductors and clean up crews with their messy remains after jumping off high bridges and in front of trains. Just go to a clinic or a morgue and lay down on the gurney and leave the world respectfully... Ah well, doubtless people will find something horrible in that idea, too.

I worry that the train tracks are becoming the new "cold springs bridge"....

There is a long history of suicide by train in Carp. I think the guys that choose to go this way are actually trying to do it somewhere they will not be found by family members. And we all grew up hanging out near the tracks to go surf or party with friends so there's a sort of draw there. Sorry bro, wish you could have held out one more day, something might have changed.

If the trains are ever to become high-speed, the tracks will have to be fenced off, and crossings isolated, as they are in other countries with high-speed service. Might as well start now.

002 - High speed rail will use different tracks in separate locations from our current freight RR tracks.

Shots fired, civilians & law enforcement dead or dying. Drivers losing control of their vehicles killing themselves & innocent others. People are wandering on the freeway day & night. Break ins at schools for computers, high speed chases, car jackings, home invasions, and people getting hit by trains. Are our planets out of alignment? Only inconsiderate people jump in front of trains. Do they really understand the impact of what so many people are left behind? Suicide is really a selfish act. From the conductor to the passengers, to the witnesses, to those whose job is to clean it up. The bridge is now all wrapped up now. Do you think that these people would have jumped off of that bridge instead of choosing "death by train?" It is so sad to even try to put yourself into their shoes where things are so bad that they feel their time on Earth is through. All that being said my answer to train deaths would be to put cow catchers on the trains again. Maybe then it wouldn't be so attractive to these people.

104P: I agree it's a selfish way to die. I get they don't want family to find them, but what's so darn appealing about getting hit by a train?

984p, where's the stats on what you claim? I'd say it's about 50/50 suicide accident, pretty close to it.

There is nothing 'appealing' about suicide yet there are many who just want out. Calling these people selfish is self-centered. I agree with 84P.

People who commit suicide hate themselves most don't care what they look like after they die. A train like jumping from the Cold Springs bridge is a for sure thing. The train is usually faster.. It's not for me though I would not want to go that way.

I read one comment that said if it was a suicide, you can't really blame the train. We haven't ever had a death caused by a train driver.

Since the tracks have been bringing trains here since 1887, I think everyone knows the "Iron Horses" won't be swerving to miss them. Hard to not know what will happen if you don't move when the whistle blows. My guess is, most are suicides; exception being the ones trying to get their dogs off the tracks; we've had 2 of those here in Carp, including my neighbor.

I'd be curious to see the statistics on the number of rail fatalities for the Santa Barbara area versus the state and nation.

I googled up recent numbers and it showed 116 fatalities in California for 2010 (if I recall correctly.)

Seems like for a state this large we get a disproportionate percentage right here in the SB area.

COMMENT 374304 agree helpful negative off topic

Since they cannot jump off the Cold Spring Bridge as easily they are now doing suicide by train.

002: Can you imagine how much it would cost to construct fences on both sides of high speed rail tracks? There is no way this will happen with the exception of possibly in urban areas.
