Dress Measurements
updated: Feb 12, 2013, 4:49 PM
I'm a bridesmaid for my friend's wedding and need to get measured before I order the bridesmaid dress.
Where do you recommend I go? Do they normally charge for this?

I think you can go to a bridal shop - ask them if they carry that bridesmaid dress (ie can order it). They should do it for you because you could be a potential customer one day!

I already know where I'm going to order it... I'm just going to have to get measured separately because I'm the lone bridesmaid that lives 5 hours away. lol :)

Clearly the most qualified to take your measurements is a seamstress or taylor. Call a bridal shop, there is one in the Galleria on State & Hope, and ask them what they would charge for the service of taking your measurements. Voila'. You will know up front how much it will cost you.

Any bridal store or tailor can help you. A tailor might be easier since you don't have to be ordering something from them. You will likely have to have some adjustments made to the dress when you get it anyway, so a tailor can also help with that.

Tony the Tailor is awesome -- he's on the first block of West Mission Street.

The place you are ordering it from should be able to tell you what measurements you need, and then you and a friend with a tape measure can just do it yourself. Lots of us used to sew, and measuring is quite simple.

Don't do them yourself, it's harder than it seems. You will cut down on the fitting necessary when you get the dress.

Any bridal shop should do this as a courtesy. As a former owner of a bridal shop I can tell you that most of the bridesmaid gown orders come from out of town bridesmaids supplying measurements.
