CHP no longer sees the subject they say he walked East over the bridge..Possible false alarm for now..Police are surrounding the bridge..I don't know if they got him or what but they went code 4 No more assistence needed.

We'll see more and more of this in town now that the Cold Spring Bridge is harder to use.

Sounds as though they were able to get to the jumper. Much easier for a local bridge than one further away.

I'm glad they were able to get to him, and get him to treatment. Its horrible that people feel they have to end their life to deal with whatever is haunting them. I pray that those who are contemplating this, find loved ones, friends, or just concerned people in their lives that help direct them to the help they need.

Plus if they are really threatening to jump they shut the freeway down so there is a captive audience. After a while the sympathy any of the drivers might have had is long gone. Remember the guy waving a gun on the La Cumbre overpass a couple of years ago?

Cares is a place to go for counseling..They also respond people for crisis situtions I think..I don't know their whole story either but there is alittle. I'm pretty sure if you google it you might get more information.

Thanks. Found it at the County of Santa Barbara Web site. CARES (Crisis and Recovery Emergency Services) consolidates crisis stabilization, intake, mobile crisis response and access to service for mental health and alcohol and drug emergencies. Staffed by mental health professionals, CARES provides crisis support on a 24/7 basis, serves children and adults, and works closely with the SAFTY program.

My 59 year old brother in law killed himself in August after talking about doing it for a few weeks beforehand. Nobody took hom seriously because he was drunk whenever he said it, and seemed to be wallowing in his misery... He made several ( what looked to us) half-hearted attempts, like jumping off a ground- floor window ledge. We loved him dearly and felt he was desperate for attention, which we gave him, willingly. But his suicide took us by surprise - astonishingly, in spite if all of the above, not one of us believed he would really do it. It is VERY difficult to help someone who has mental issues and refuses to be helped. The law protects us all; we cannot be locked up "for our own good" without very good reason and following of certain procedures... It is even more difficult to live with the pain, the loss, the guilt, the remorse and the hindsight when they kill themselves. If you are dealing with something like this please talk to someone about getting help.

Whenever I walk over the State Street/101 overpass I'm surprised by the lack of deterrents (fences etc.) on it. Of all the overpasses in town, pedestrian or car, it has the lowest rail and seemingly easiest access to one that is contemplating suicide. Frankly I'm shocked that, to my knowledge, there has been no effort to erect some sort of fence in this area. If someone is determined, it seems it would be an easy location.
