Xeriscaping Landscaper

Any referrals for a landscaper who is experienced in xeriscaping? I can't afford the high-end
contractors, but this is for a large backyard area.

Try contacting Lawrence at Santa Barbara Xeriscaping - not allowed to pot his web site, but he's easy enough to find by doing the Goog thing. Lots of experience and may do work for trade if you have anything to trade.

Daniel Wilson of Wilson Environmental Lanscsoe design. He has done a lot of high quality work for us and xeriscape is a large portion of it. Not sure your budget but you can always get an estimate from any contractor or designer as well as referrals.

You can find similar results by searching for 'Mediteranean landscape style'. 'Xeriscape' was a popular term in the late 80's and 90's when low water-use landscaping was a novelty. Not used all that much any more. 'Sustainable' is also a commonly-used term nowadays, synonymous with Xeriscaping and Mediterranean. All feature low water-use plantings, site soils and grading assessment, integral use of water-permeable hardscaping surfaces, catchment basins where feasible, low or no fertizliers and other garden chemicals, and (perhaps most important) planting plans with spacings which don't require endless pruning. Be sure to indicate to the designer the amount of engagement you'll wish to have with your landscape's maintenance.

Consider hiring a landscape architect. There are some good landscapers around, but hiring one to design a garden, is a bit like building a house without an architect. If you can make it work, consider having the plan done professionally and then save money by doing the installation with some lower priced labor. Phil Suding of Suding Design (landscape architect, listed in the SB phone book) did a great job planing the Xeriscape design on our acre lot. He's not an installer, but certainly knows the plants, resources for getting the plants, and low-water irrigation systems and has a great eye for color and design.

Check out the Water Wise SB site, lots of info on sustainable/water efficient plants and gardening, and a list of certified "Green Gardeners." Also check out the Surfrider Foundation's "Ocean Friendly Gardens" program.
