At 10:10 am, Santa Barbara County Fire Department (SBC FD) responded to a vehicle over the side with
fire, located on Highway 101 south bound at the entrance road to Nojoqui Park.
SBC FD responded two engines and a battalion chief to the scene. SBCFD was assisted
by two ambulances from American Medical Response, the Santa Barbara County Air
Support Unit, and the California Highway Patrol.
First arriving firefighters found a vehicle approximately 70 feet over the side, off the
highway, on fire. Firefighters had to use chainsaws to remove vegetation to gain access
to the vehicle. A Good Samaritan was able to pull the driver from the burning vehicle
prior to the firefighter's arrival. An off duty firefighter also assisted with the driver.
Firefighters used a low angle rope system to carry the patient up to the highway. The
rescue took about one hour to complete. The driver was transported to the hospital via AMR ambulance
with moderate injuries. The Good Samaritan was treated on scene for
minor injuries and refused transport to the hospital. The highway was wet due to heavy
rain in the area. The number two lane was closed for about an hour and a half.
The cause of the accident is under investigation by the CHP.

I heard search & rescue was cancelled. That's too bad -- they're better with ropes than anyone in the county.

Sounds like quite a ride. Think now the driver will be more cautious when driving in the rain? Hurrah for people who help people. Good on ya, mate.
