Lily's, Rudy's, and El Torito used to have some really tasty "Mexico City" style tacos but I think that's when it was called Hola Amigos...

Rosales Mexican Restaurant is pretty amazing. It took over the building on Milpas and Montecito that used to be Presto Pasta. Everyone I've sent there goes back.

Second to them would be El Buen Gusto.

Hate to say it, as it's a "corporate" mexican restaurant, but the above mentioned La Salsa is really good! They honestly have THE BEST tortilla soup I have EVER had!

Am a carnivore, but the vegetarian taco at La Colmena is excellent. Their rice and beans are exceptional too. Nice people, also, and reasonably priced. Does anyone else miss La Tolteca beef tacos?

Best hard shell taco...Rudy's

Soft...Cuernavaca for the el pastor, La Colmena for the rajas, Super Rica for the #16 and the queso fudido with chorizo.

Rudys hands down has the best hard taco.

Nothing, and I mean nothing beats homemade carnitas tacos! Carnitas meat, diced white onions, freshly made gucamole, cilantro, thin corn tortillas from Santa Cruz Market and topped with your favorite hot sauce. Wait I forgot something, and your favorite beer to wash it all down. Repeat until full.

Rudys is good, but only by location. The one in Carpinteria is just absolutely dreadful. Hard, rubbery food with no taste. It's almost like two different restaurants.

La Colmena gets another vote from me.

Throw stones at me if you'd like but I get cravings for the FishHouse fish tacos if I go too long without.... and I never order fish.

They have changed their Happy Hour tacos so they don't have all the fixings... it's worth it to get the real deal.

Yummmmmm

Definitely Pepe's in downtown Goleta. Pepe's also serve, hands down, the best bean & cheeze tostadas in the world.

@456: I STILL go to Pepe's because I'm poor--but even if had 50 bucks I'd still go there for the wonderful tacos and tostadas. I walked into Lilly's once, but the smell and the ambiance kind of put me off, as did the idea of tongue tacos. (Maybe they could call them "tongue-cos?")

I still miss the Victory Cafe across Chapala Street from VanWyk Volkswagen, whose tacos were as good as Pepe's.

Just out of town, I really like the fish tacos at Baja Grill in Goleta. Better than wahoo's.

I miss the old Villareal Market on Haley st. At the Meat counter in the back of the store they cooked up the best Carnitas, Al Pastor, Carne Asada. This was a favorite haunt of Julia Child...miss her too.

Interesting no one said La Super Rica.

I like Taqueria El Bajio on Milpas St.

Villareal is now Mi Fiesta market but it's still the same people behind the meat counter and the same good food.

Lilly's wins, if you're looking for authentic tacos. Now if you're too gringo for REAL tocos, then you can go to those other Americano taco stands with their 3 for 1000 calorie, fufu, crunchy tacos...On a tight budget, then Jack N the Box.

Best hands down are on the Ventura Pier. If I don't want to drive, then On The Alley at the Harbor or Natural Cafe.

COMMENT 372518 agree helpful negative off topic

1) Lilly's
2) Reyes market in Carp. (the best Al Pastor)
3) La Colmena (fantastic Adobada)
4) El Bajio (tacos dorado!!!!!)
5) El Buen Gusto - Their verde salsa is amazing

If you dont like street style (small tortillas, meat, onions and cilantro) you wont like Lilly's or Colmena. If you prefer your tacos with all the American style fixing you're better off hitting up one of the more gentrified establishments. And if you dont like pork or the more exotic meats, you wont like most Authentico Mexican places regardless...

Lilly's is considered one of the best and most authentic. They even made it into the New York Times Food section.

Fast, friendly service. Great staff.

Convenient parking.

Lilly's for sure. And second to that El Sitio. One of the best carnita tacos I've had, and by far the best spicy pick de gallo.

I've never been to La Colmena, but I think I know where I'm going this weekend! I'm always on the lookout for more tacos!

REX - Victory Cafe was a great place, not only for the food but also the music. The Meyers family owned it and mama Meyers did the cooking and the kids did the waiting and also sang on the little bandstand in the cafe. I believe that Mr Meyers sang and played guitar at the Harbor restaurant
also. This was in the late 60's early 70's. Fond memories!

The lengua (tongue) taco at El Bajio is the best par none.

Lilly's is alright if you feel like eating a hoof or eyeball taco. I prefer homemade from any of my friends from Mexico :)
