Rosales Mexican Restaurant is pretty amazing. It took over the building on Milpas and Montecito that used to be Presto Pasta. Everyone I've sent there goes back. Second to them would be El Buen Gusto.

Nothing, and I mean nothing beats homemade carnitas tacos! Carnitas meat, diced white onions, freshly made gucamole, cilantro, thin corn tortillas from Santa Cruz Market and topped with your favorite hot sauce. Wait I forgot something, and your favorite beer to wash it all down. Repeat until full.

@456: I STILL go to Pepe's because I'm poor--but even if had 50 bucks I'd still go there for the wonderful tacos and tostadas. I walked into Lilly's once, but the smell and the ambiance kind of put me off, as did the idea of tongue tacos. (Maybe they could call them "tongue-cos?") I still miss the Victory Cafe across Chapala Street from VanWyk Volkswagen, whose tacos were as good as Pepe's.

Lilly's wins, if you're looking for authentic tacos. Now if you're too gringo for REAL tocos, then you can go to those other Americano taco stands with their 3 for 1000 calorie, fufu, crunchy tacos...On a tight budget, then Jack N the Box.

1) Lilly's 2) Reyes market in Carp. (the best Al Pastor) 3) La Colmena (fantastic Adobada) 4) El Bajio (tacos dorado!!!!!) 5) El Buen Gusto - Their verde salsa is amazing If you dont like street style (small tortillas, meat, onions and cilantro) you wont like Lilly's or Colmena. If you prefer your tacos with all the American style fixing you're better off hitting up one of the more gentrified establishments. And if you dont like pork or the more exotic meats, you wont like most Authentico Mexican places regardless...

REX - Victory Cafe was a great place, not only for the food but also the music. The Meyers family owned it and mama Meyers did the cooking and the kids did the waiting and also sang on the little bandstand in the cafe. I believe that Mr Meyers sang and played guitar at the Harbor restaurant also. This was in the late 60's early 70's. Fond memories!
