I'm curious as to why the sky appears lighter inside the arc.

All are great, thanks; love rainbows. I caught part of one here in Carp in the afternoon.

Some very nice images of double rainbows, particularly that by Don Hodgon. 13P: The area inside the rainbow arc (42 degree antisolar cone) appears brighter because while all raindrops scatter light, only those within this cone can reach our eyes.
