Pedestrian Crosswalk Enforcement Actions
updated: Feb 06, 2013, 8:37 PM

The City of Santa Barbara recently improved pedestrian crossing conditions on Milpas St. at Ortega and Yanonali Streets. Part of the improvements includes pedestrian activated flashing lights. When the lights are flashing, it indicates that a pedestrian is trying to cross the street. In order to raise awareness at these crosswalks, the Santa Barbara Police department, with the assistance of the traffic engineering department, will be conducting pedestrian crosswalk enforcement actions at these locations and other locations throughout the city of Santa Barbara on Thursday February 7, 2013. If you have any questions please contact Sergeant Mike McGrew.

I am SO glad to see the flashing lights technology, having seen it in other cities and thought: We should have that! Also note that parts of Milpas that were wide or confusing have been narrowed down to two lanes, which makes it more manageable for traffic and pedestrians. (I once went to a seminar of a nationally known city-traffic planner, and he said the most dangerous type of street for pedestrians was the wide urban four-lane including a center turn lane, as on Milpas -- it's too much for drivers to take in visually.) Now if peds would help by looking both ways when they cross the street, keeping an eye on stopped cars while crossing - a driver might get distracted or his brakes fail - and by not flinging their car doors open into the traffic lane without looking.

Saw the traffic enforcement action at Yanonali/Milpas this morning. Good job, police!!!

For the drivers, though, it might be helpful to have also flashing lights at lower levels than they presently are.

Funny how SBPD failed to notify the public so we could witness and video record the PD conduct the "enforcement" operation. If you have received a ticket or know someone who received a ticket be aware a request was made to SBPD for advanced notification of this "enforcement" so the event could be recorded for the purpose of providing evidence to cited motorists. SBPD failed to honor that request.

They gave notice over a month ago. But just don't break the law, then you wont need to have a videographer to follow you around to help fight your ticket.

The SBPD gave no notice of the times of today's operation. There is no notice of the times on Edhat, Noozhawk, KEYT, News-Press, nowhere. The PD's Info release yesterday did not give the times the "enforcements" were to be conducted. Show me the press release or other PD statement or document where the exact times of the enforcement operations were stated in advance of the operations.
