Daniel's bakery on De La Vina (above Alamar) has a sign in their window saying they have cheese tamales. No idea if they are truly vegetarian though.

I'll 'third' that opinion about Trader Joe's tamales. DONT microwave them-steam them in a steamer for 20 minutes-perfecto! and dont waste time on the Chicken tamales-blehhh

723, that wasn't the question. If they wanted to make the tamales themselves, I would assume they would have just made them and not asked the question to begin with. Why do some people feel the need to answer questions that aren't asked in the first place? OP, I second 737's suggestion about Daniel's and also I agree with those who say the TJ's cheese tamales are pretty good, too. Nothing close to authentic, but pretty darn good!

Do you have any Mexican friends? I have dozens of them, and no fewer than 4 of them have family members that make tamales (cheese and others). Ask around. These homemade tamales put Costco and Trader Joe's tamales to shame...and they cost less.

756, what is your point? That out of dozens of Mexican friends, 4 make great tamales? Cool story. But the question still remains where to buy them! I can't imagine asking my Mexican friends (and I AM half Mexican) to make me tamales every week. I don't understand why this question is so hard for some people to get!

We've enjoyed dozens of tamales made locally from a new business "Food For My Soul." They're tamales made like they're made in Belize. Delicious! http://www.foodformysoul.net/tamales/

The lady that sold in my neighborhood had the best cheese tamales. She rolled around with a baby stroller. Lift up the blanket and there was a pot of hot tamales! 3 for $5. Potato toacos were good too. She prolly got caught... I haven't seen her in a long time. Where are you tamale lady?! TAMALES! TAMALES!

Call the Natural Cafe on State St or in Goleta. Theirs are vegetarian and I think they can make them just the way *you* like them. If you are looking for a retail store that sells them, I second Costco or TJ's.

Unlicensed street vendors can be good for this, but just don't mind the bacterial contamination.

Tamales are steamed a good long while -- I don't think any bugs can survive. The street vendors have the best delicate masa wrapping around the cheese interior, eaten when they're brand new hot, that can't be rivalled by anything frozen.

I hate to spoil it for you all--I loves me some tamales--but most tamales are GMO. Almost all yellow corn is now genetically engineered. Thank you Monsanto!

885, bacterial contamination? Check out the recall list for every major grocery store chain in the past few months. Mass marketed food is just as dangerous - if not moreso - than hand made food. Also, I'd trust people whose livelihood depends on repeat business than a bigger chain, in certain instances. 000, they aren't authentic by any means, but they do make a good tamale for sale at Costco. Try it, you might like it. As for local, two months ago, the tamales they had were from Ventura. So, your argument is a bit under-researched!

I don't know why people on here have to police others comments. Worry about yourself! As far as making tamales, if you like them enough you learn how to make them, it's as simple as that! Mexican or not!

re: the GMO comment; most of the importers for restaurants sell white corn for tamale masa making. There's a supplier in Santa Maria on Blosser near Betteravia. Have no idea if its' GMO or not, but it's "superior white corn for authentic masa". Now I'm hungry for tamales too. I make them but can't get that fluffy texture to the masa. mmm mmm good!
