Volunteer Opportunities

The abrupt closure of Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic (Learning Ally)
left a big hole in my week. Can anyone suggest volunteer opportunities in
Santa Barbara/Goleta that are of use and provide intellectual stimulation in
a friendly atmosphere? Thanks!

Become a literacy volunteer through the SB library: http://sbplibrary.org/services/tutoring-adults.html (info for volunteers is about 1/2 way down the page).

Santa Barbara County Education Office "Partners in Education" offers numerous opportunities to involve yourself in our local schools working with youth. One time or on-going, depending on your schedule. Career Day, mock interviews, job shadows, high school academy programs and guest speakers in classrooms. http://www.sbceo.org/~partners/p&i_main.html

Tell us more about the closing. Was a news item posted here? Search (on Edhat) turns up nothing.

I searched it on Google and found this: http://www.berkshireeagle.com/ci_22446633/lenox-ally-studio-closes Evidently they closed a number of studios due to loss of funding. Too bad, it was a great resource. I didn't see anything in the local media.

Afterschool homework help is needed at Ladera Apartments or 2 Carpinteria after school sites -- contact Peoples' Self-Help Housing at 699-7227. Low income kids could use your help! Thank you.

If you like kittens and cats, ASAP in Goleta is a great place. Little dogs or big dogs, any of the shelters in the same location. I spend 3-4 hrs/wk at the County shelter with the big dogs and have a great time with each one. They really appreciate any interaction with people and any exercise you can give them. Just about any non-profit that you think has an important mission needs volunteers. Thanks for helping out!

RSVP lists all kinds of volunteer opportunites. Also, both local hospice organizations have websites and need volunteers who can serve either in clerical or patient care capacities.

I bet just about any public school would welcome your help in the library. I know my daughter's elementary school relies almost exclusively on volunteers to staff their library.
