We live in Brooklyn and want to come out to Santa Barbara on March 24th to photograph wild flowers in
your area. Can you please tell us if you think that there will be much to see this year in your area?

Not a lot of rain in town but Santa Ynez has been doing better. Look up Figueroa Mountain Wildflowers and you will get an idea of what you should see on 3/24. That is a perfect date, my anniversary. Take the entire loop around the mountain back down Happy Canyon as there are different zones and plants.

March can be an "iffy" month...sometimes our hardest rains fall in March. I would say late April/early May would be the best, if you could come then.

Wildflower "season" can be fickle and unpredictable. If you're hoping to photograph the Figueroa Mountain poppies and lupine...we won't know for a while if we will get a good bloom or not. We always have wildflowers of some type or another in Spring and you'll definitely find something to shoot in our foothills or in the Santa Ynez valley area. I hope we have a good year too, specifically the Death Valley area, where I want to go this spring.

I love photographing wildflowers! You should search Flickr using key words like: Santa Barbara Botanical Garden Mt or Mount Figeroua Carrizo Plain (National Monument) Shell Beach Hwy 58 Santa Ynez Then note the dates the photos were taken And Aqua is right, you never know, and this might be a good year for Death Valley- 1.47" on the morning report and Lone Pine (think rocks and Ansel Adams)

If you go to Death Valley leave a morning sunrise and sunset for the Alabama Hills outside Lone Pine.

Yes. There are always wildflowers here in spring. If you have time and transportation, another great place for wildflowers is the Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve.

These are all great suggestions so far. I would also like to suggest the area surrounding the La Purisma Mission near Lompoc. It will depend on our spring rains.

For true "wildflowers" you might want to consider Arroyo Hondo Preserve. Local natives in their natural habitat with trails, scenic vistas and large areas of native vegetation. Open first and third weekends; reservations required. Check it out here: http://www.sblandtrust.org/arroyo-hondo-preserve-2/

Hwy 1 between the 101 and Lompoc may be filled with wild flowers by then. The hills are quite beautiful near there too!

Mount Figeroua finds nothing. Figueroa Mountain would be a better search string.

D8vanilla has your best bet. Unless you're willing to spend months waiting it's a gamble. If it's popping the Carrizo Plain is hard to beat!

Contact Mark Jansen http://markjansenphotography.com/. He leads all kinds of photo workshops into the mountains and desert and has many years of experience in this area. He's a great guy and may be able to help. Go Brooklyn!

Schedule with a company that takes people out to the desert during bloom time. I think they use jeeps.

Contact the local Camera Club and you may get someone to ferry you around. California is a dream compared to where you are at. A bad day here is a great day there. If we have sufficient rain the dessert is where you will find true treasures.
