@940:

Just let them jump? Seriously? Who's going to help the people that witness such a tragedy? If you had ever experienced something like this, I seriously doubt you'd have the same opinion. Also most of the real suicide attempts that are thwarted, the person is later thankful to get help and live out their life. Have some compassion. More and more people are becoming cold hearted in Santa Barbara. Just sad :(

The only person who knows if a life is worth living or not is the person living it.

People make value judgments based on their own life and use it to criticize the decisions of the ones suffering.

Sometimes an interrupted suicide just means prolonged misery.

The peace of oblivion awaits us all sooner or later.

It strikes me as I read this that many of you do not know the utter despair, pain, both physical & mental, and absolute feelings of worthlessness of people who try to commit suicide. You folks should count yourself among the lucky and privileged to have not known a world that is dark, dank, deep, and unforgiving. You are the people who should sit on the bridges and man the phone lines to let these people that someone cares. Quite often their pain comes from a delicate imbalance that is beyond their control and cannot afford the medications needed to help them have a productive life, or maybe to just feel like living. Just stop and look around you and THINK first instead of pontificating about something you know nothing to very little about.

You have no idea what you are talking about by judging other people "You, you, you," I choose to live my life with humor no matter how bad my life gets..If I could not laugh about all this I might just snap bones and they wouldn't be mine. I have never been Lucky or Privileged or lived in a Bright world. Do not lay your little head trip on me...My life is something you know very little about. Many people in this life have been through HELL they just choose not to stay there.

One of the major problems in this country is the failure to instill the ability in our children to be self reliant. To the contrary we are increasingly willing to blame others for our own problems, blame various kinds of discrimination by "society" against us, expect government or others to solve our problems. etc. It is tantamount to back-door socialism. Obviously people with self confidence and a positive attitude are confident they will improve their lot no matter how bad or depressing it becomes and not become a homeless dependent, escape by substance abuse or become a suicide victim, the latter of which is the ultimate escape from dealing with one's life status and problems.

 COMMENT 370224 agree helpful negative off topic

I don't think you understand what socialism is.

Also your lack of understanding of mental illness is pretty offensive.

 COMMENT 370238 agree helpful negative off topic

2013-02-02 12:18 PM

Put simply socialism is the "Nanny government" which is the provider of most essentials in life, the opposite of pure capitalism which is too harsh but essentially requires everyone to fend for themselves. Walter Rostow once characterized the American system as welfare capitalism. Where the line should be drawn between when government assistance is needed and when government should not get involved in ambiguous. The trend in the past decade, particularly under the current administration is to have government providing more and more services at the expense of those working to fund those services and infrastructure. We need to teach our children to be more self reliant and how to deal with problems in general. That is not to deny help to the truly needy and mentally ill. Most who threaten suicide are not mentally ill but are merely crying out for recognition.

Roger I was not speaking exclusively to you or about you. How interesting you've chosen it to speak you only. What does that say about you and society as a whole? And, by the way how do you know I do not know of which I speak?

@370218

The notion that the trend you speak of extends over 6 years of the previous administration and 4 years of the current one is incoherent.

Here's the truth: Nearly the entirety of gains produced by the working people you speak of have gone into the estates of the top 1% -- people like Paris Hilton and the Walmart Waltons. 93% of the benefits of the recovery from recession has gone into those hands ... not toward government services.

Suicide means chemical imbalance in the brain, but people don't really know how to get back to balance in their brain, though doctors keep searching.
Search Buteyko, include Youtube, some good videos on there. Buteykos asthma cure via reduced breathing exercises in my opinion may be a cure for suicide, etc. just a guess based on my own medical history.
