Anyone know when the biggest swell to hit the Santa Barbara coast was? It seems
like it's been a while since we've had any really significant surf light up our
coast. Care to share any memorable BIG days?

December 1969. There may have been others but that was the biggest swell of my life that had clean good surf.

02/25/08. Man, that swell was just mind boggling. The east side of Stearns wharf was breaking a couple feet overhead that day. The wharf ended up getting closed. I remember we were checking surf from Summerland's park and saw that the coastline was closed out in whitewater as far as the eye could see. Rincon was enormous.

2008 I rode a huge, but fairly mellow, beast of a wave from Campus to Goleta Beach. Then I realized I had to go through the shorepound to get to the beach! It was a bit sketchy but I managed and started walking back up when a friend who was among the onlookers called out and gave me a ride back to Campus. That was the biggest day I remember actually witnessing.

1969 is in the record books. The day the gates got torn off the mussel shoals causeway was not so long ago. I think third reef Rincon was breaking too. No one I know ever saw that before. Last fall there was a day that had more lookers than takers, dbl-ohd at the con.

69 was definitly the biggest beast of a swell in my 44 years surfing this county. We could hear the surf from our garage in the goleta foothills. We went down to goleta beach that night, and the waves were breaking over the pier. For a 9 year old that was a eye opener.

During the '69 swell, Rincon was huge, but rideable.....the '83 swell was so big even Rincon Point couldn't hold it and it turned into an unrideable monstrous beach break.

The 83 storm (the Queen's Storm) took out the bike path on the ocean side of the east Leadbetter lot. Or rather, it took all the sand out from under it; there it was hanging in the air.

a little OT - Did not live here in 1969 but volkswagons were washing out of Topanga Canyon towards Ventura Blvd in Woodland Hills. That may have been a fun ride. We needed a school bus to take us across the street to school (no storm drains yet) I believe the Santa Clara River was flowing over the 101.

2008 - I was a beginning surfer and could not get out. Probably good that I did not get out - that surf was big. Enjoyed watching others, including a surf kayaker.

The '83 storm rolled over Stearn's wharf, lifting the loose planks, and flooding part of Moby Dick's. It was breaking over the wharf. Pretty exciting time to be out there!

I would say 69' and 95'( Big Wednesday) were the two biggest although 83' and 2005' were solid too!
