For some time now I've been of a mind to visit Iceland, although I really have no idea why. Can anyone recommend for or against it, and if for, what are some of the highlights I should plan for on the trip?

For it. Been there 3 times and love it. Blue Lagoon is a must. Geysers and other great scenery. Great people and food. Can stand on 2 contients at the same time if that's your thing. Was kind of expensive but could be better now since their economy tanked. No problems with homeless bothering you or people chasing after you trying to sell you something. Remember Iceland is green and Greenland is mostly ice.

Amazing place! You will get so bored seeing so many rainbows and waterfalls. Super awesome moss everywhere. SO much beauty etc.

I've always wanted to go. So much so I know that you can fly there from Seattle or a few spots on the east coast including Delta from JFK.

I had a landlord who took a bike over there and biked around all of Iceland by himself. He said it was a wonderful time. Sounds like a good idea to me. By the way, Iceland is on the mend even though they let their banks fail. I think they're recovering much faster than Europe so far.

A good friend of mine went a year ago, had an amazing time, she highly recommended it. Don't forget to spend a day soaking at one of the spas - she said it was definitely worth it.

Most people visit Iceland en-route to Europe. There are some good deals, particularly on the home airline. The geysers, mountains and the waterfalls are quite spectacular, and the Blue Lagoon is a wonderful experience. But, as noted by another writer, it can be quite an expensive spot...

If you do go, and I think you absolutely should, can I fit in your suitcase? Going tomorrow night to see the movie 'Driftwood" at the Lobero. Parts of it were filmed in Iceland....go check it out and see for yourself!

Check out the Icelantic Airlines web page . They have all kinds of tours and deals along with stopovers going to Europe. I believe you can fly out of Denver or Seattle so you could fly from SBA

March is prime Aurora Borealis season, and the Sun is in a fairly active phase, so be sure to go out a night if you visit.

Check out the Icelandic horses; small, sturdy wonderful animals. They haven't allowed any horses imported for something like 800 years, keeps out disease and the breed pure. If horses are exported, they can't be brought back in. I've ridden them in Santa Ynez, very comfortable.

Be sure to have a tour of a hydroelectric power plant--amazing use of nature's own hot water. The history of Iceland is also interesting so go to some of their museums and take a bus ride into the interior regions, too. The waterfalls are spectacular, the hot pots and geysers are impressive and the countryside is very beautiful. You will see rhubarb growing in most gardens and you can enjoy rhubarb jelly and pies. Enjoy your trip. It is worthwhile and I second the suggestion for Iceland Airlines.

Stop by The Travel Store of Santa Barbara. Great guide books, maps and personal travel experience throughout Iceland, once in the cockpit of an IcelandAir DC8-63 lifting out of Keflavik at dawn...many readers have already encouraged to go, it is expensive but very much worth it. See you soon!

Oooh, many great suggestions so far. I'm not the OP, but am also interested in visiting: If you do visit the Blue Lagoon, where would you recommend staying? I've heard that transportation could be a pain.

Yea! Flicka! You're right. These great little horses are so comfortable to ride and they are one of the 52 breeds of horses in the Santa Ynez valley. Hope the OP can get a ride while over there in borealis land.

421 You can stay at most any hotel in town. One short bus ride to the depot for the buses to Blue Lagoon. Just like Europe buses are clean and run on time and frequently. We never rented cars when there. Great bus tours go all over the island.

my hairstylist recently had a great trip, but the cuisine might take some getting used to. He said that shark stuffed w/ sheep (or the other way around) was a local delicacy that would be considered rude not to partake.
