Water Test Drilling
updated: Jan 30, 2013, 10:20 AM

I live on Richland Dr. off of Broadmore Plaza. Behind the San Roque Plaza area, there has been a lot of drilling for water testing by the city. When I asked the hired testers they where hushed lip, and it seems more drilling is on the horizon. Does anyone know whats going on or how to find out?

The City is not having anyone drill for water in that area.

Reentering old idle oil wells and determining if remaining oil in place can be extracting using modern techniques such as acidizing or fracking.

How do you know it's being done by the city, and how do you know it's for water testing? There are other reasons for drilling, such as for checking density/stability of the ground in plans for development.

this property was purchased by an outside investor group that wants to develop the land - they are testing how expansive the soil is to determine what can be built - they want to put in a two story structure with underground parking hence the "water" table testing

Is this drilling taking place on city streets in the Broadmoor/Richland cul-de-sacs? Or is this drilling taking place on the private property that is part of Loretto or San Roque Plazas?

Decades ago, there were two cleaners that operated in each of those Plaza's and when one (or both) closed down, the water was later tested by the property owners to see if there was any contamination of chemicals from the cleaners. Who knows, it is possible that some retesting is being done.

check the city counter for building permits - it has all the info you need - it looks like the city is trying to keep a hush on this - when I inquired the guy at the desk got on the phone with some guy named Wiley??? to see what he was allowed to tell me

There have been allegations that fertilizer used on the golf course is significant in polluting Arroyo Burro Creek and/or affecting bacteria growth. I don't know if this testing is related.

One friend of mine works for the USPS and another works for the private firm that is doing the drilling/testing. He (geologist) has been calling her (USPS) to schedule appointments to drill, etc. From that I assume that the USPS owns or leases the property. Why they are testing for and why I don't know. The next time I talk to him or her I will ask!

"Facts" as I know them:
The post office leases the San Roque Post Office. About 15 years ago, the rent was $10,000 a month. The soil was contaminated by at least one dry cleaner in the past. The City of Santa Barbara, in its long-term Upper State Street Redevelopment Plan, zoned that strip for two-story commercial buildings.
