Out of Town Couch
updated: Jan 28, 2013, 7:31 PM

I am looking for a new couch, and can't find one I like locally. Can readers suggest their favorite furniture stores out of town? Anywhere from Lompoc to the north down to Thousand Oaks would be fine. I like to support locally owned, even outside Santa Barbara, so non-chain suggestions are especially appreciated.

Home Furniture in Camarillo has a great selection. They were very helpful when I was shopping for furniture.

Sofa U Love on State will custom make you anything you want if they don't have something you like. Bring in a picture from a catalog of something you want, and they can do it for you. Quick friendly service too, took a few weeks for our new couch last year, and it was well worth it.

I LOVE the couch I bought recently from furniture 2 go online. I had seen their name pop up a few times before and was a little skeptical... It was easy to order, and they made delivery really convenient. I got a set for an amazing price and it looks great. I even found the same couch on amazon for hundreds more.

My parents recently got some nice quartersawn oak furniture from a place that I think was down in thousand oaks or possibly northern la. They had to go down to select the furniture, but they delivered to the house. It was pricey, but it was made here in the states too, which was pretty cool. I can't remember the name of the company, but I'll find out and post it.

Overstock-dot-com.

They delivered and set up a large sectional couch with their "white glove" service.

Very happy with merchandise, price and service.

OP here. I asked for furniture stores, but I guess I should have clarified furniture stores with showroom physical locations. I am not sure how people are able to pick a couch out without sitting on it, but I can't, I have to try them out. Thank you!

Craigslist. You just know there is someone locally who has a lovely sofa languishing in their storage locker. I would put up a good and very specific "Wanted" ad, and see what develops. Be sure and list your "willing to pay" range.

My sofa was $$$ and came from Haywards. But my next sofa will be from Clist. People are foolish and shell out all kinds of money, move around too much. This is to your advantage.

Depends on your budget, I got a great lightly- used couch on Craigs List, and 2 years ago, bought 2 very nice new ones, reasonably priced in Oxnard at Urban Home...they have a website, with more styles than available in the store. They are right next to Olive Garden, just off the 101.

Responding to 387: It appears Sofa U Love has very poor reviews, including BBB complaints filed and a class action suit. Maybe all of their work isn't unsatisfactory? I think I would be very careful about using them. I would like to hear from other satisfied customers to offset this negative report.

We got our sofa/love seat at Easy Life in Oxnard, pretty good quality and reasonably priced. We've since been back to get a big shelf/entertainment center. They have frequent sales and you can get items on clearance sometimes, too. :-)

Reeds in Agoura is where we've bought two of ours. Reeds in Camarillo is the same name, but owned by a different part of the family and we didn't think they were as friendly or knoweldgeable. Delivery was very reasonable from Agoura.

Thanks for raising my favorite complaint about Santa Barbara - no decent furniture stores. That said, we finally bought ours at Pottery Barn after driving all over heck and creation sitting on whatever couches we could find in various stores, though I find their pillows at bit overstuffed.

We also bought some nice used furniture at the Santa Barbara Consignment Store behind Rusty's on Milpas; I also second craigslist as a good source, though in both cases you may have to wait for the right couch to show up.

Good luck!

I agree about not finding furniture in Santa Barbara. Too bad that we have to leave the area to make what to me is a major purchase. I found wonderful furniture at Crate and Barrel. They do deliver to the Santa Barbara area.

OP here. Great suggestions, thanks! I can't believe there is no store selling Stickley furniture here in town. It's quintessential arts and crafts and has a rich history....many of the homes here would have been furnished with it or the other Michigan manufacturers' pieces when originally built. The closest Stickley dealer now is in Thousand Oaks. It's expensive, but timeless. Also, so much great Shaker-inspired and Amish-built furniture is sold now in all states. Our bungalows, cottages and even ranch houses look great with it!
Someone, please open a furniture store here!! No matter how digital we get, we still need to sit and sleep!

We purchased our very comfortable couch from a store called Olga in Ventura/Oxnard years ago. A great showroom of mix-and-match styles and thousands of fabric choices. They deliver to your house after creating your special piece.

If you are looking for quality furniture, Model Interiors (Newbury Park), PTS (Thousand Oaks) or even Thomasville (Agoura Hills).

We went to the Lazy Boy store in Oxnard and bought a fabulous leather couch and recliner set -- the couch has two built in recliners too! We love them. They had a huge selection of regular couches too. They had fabric choices and many different colors of leather.

I got my futon chair (and they have couches) at Couch Potato on Main Street in Ventura. For Your Home has a very nice selection of all kinds of furniture, but they specialize in Mission style (Oak).

There is an Ethan Allen store in the Telephone Road center, near Barnes & Noble, right off the 101 Freeway, if you're looking for more traditional styles.

I got a beautiful wood futon frame on craigslist for 30 bucks, the seller said I could have it for free if we hauled her old mattress away too. We did that but I still offered her the money. She took ten dollars and told me to keep the rest. We bought a spring futon mattress at walmart for about 130 bucks and it's very comfortable. Other than that, what happened to danica house? I know, history.

Eddiekd: do a search on edhat for "sofa" - a link from 1/6/13 titled "Couch or Sofa Purchase" should pop up, and it had some stores locally, just in case you missed it & hadn't seen some of the local suggestions. That said, Ventura, Oxnard, Camarillo, & TO seem to have a LOT of furniture stores. I noticed a ton when driving home from LA a few months back. I'm also looking for a couch. And oddly enough, there was one I really liked at Costco recently. I have no idea what to expect of a costco quality couch, though.

We just bought a whole living room group at Ashley Furniture in Oxnard. They are just off the 101; Rose Ave. exit. They have a massive showroom. Just make sure you do your looking around first before you talk to a salesperson, because they all work on commission and once they latch onto you they never leave you alone. That's a good thing when you do have questions and you want to buy.

Ashley Furniture in Oxnard - take the Rose exit and go left - it's where the old Wicke's was. They are reasonably priced, have a lot of different styles and will deliver and set up for you here. A lot is said on this site about buying local but I have found that most of the locally owned stores in this area do not merit my business. The service is better and the goods are less expensive in the VC...it is what it is...no one is going to give you a good citizen award based on your consumerism.

Ashley also has 14-month same-as-cash financing. But they don't deliver for free. And the delivery company they use won't haul away your old sofa for free either.

Yes Ashley is now open again in Santa Maria. The last owner/franchisee closed abruptly and left many families with paid for or down paymented furniture without any furniture. Ashley Corporate said basicly " Tough-not our problem." No refunds or furniture was ever recieved. Be wary!!!

Be very careful buying used upholstery, considering the bed bug issue.
