Hit And Run Suspect Arrested

A Murrieta man was arrested in connections with a fatal, hit and run traffic collision, which occurred on January 15, 2013, at approximately 0108 hours. The fatal collision occurred on US-101 southbound near Ortega Street and claimed the life of a Santa Barbara resident, later identified as Mr. Simon Chavez. CHP Officers arrived on scene and discovered Mr. Chavez had succumbed to injuries prior to their arrival. The driver of the vehicle which struck Mr. Chavez immediately fled the scene. During the on-scene investigation, officers located items of evidentiary value, which included assorted vehicle parts and debris. Though combined CHP investigative measures, which included officers assigned to the Border Division Investigative Services Unit (ISU) and the Temecula CHP Area, the 2011 Hyundai Tucson involved in the collision was located.

On January 24, 2013, investigators served a search warrant at an address in Murrieta,California. Investigators located the white in color 2011 Hyundai Tucson at the address.

On January 26, 2013, investigators with the California Highway Patrol Santa Barbara Area made an arrest in this investigation. Mr. Lau Van Huynh, DOB 01/01/1935, of Murrieta, CA was arrested for Felony Hit and Run; a violation of California Vehicle Code section 20001/Hit and Run with fatal injuries. Mr. Huynh was booked into the Santa Barbara County Jail and his being held on $1,000,000.00 bail.

At this time, it has not been determined if alcohol or drugs may have been a factor in this collision. The investigation is ongoing and additional arrests are expected.

The California Highway Patrol, Santa Barbara Area will release more information early next week. All media inquiries should go through normal channels. A press conference will be scheduled for early next week.
