Jehovah Witnesses
updated: Jan 25, 2013, 9:15 AM

By Edhat Subscriber

I moved downtown to an apartment about a month ago and have yet to tell everyone of my new address. In the past three weekends, I have had Jehovah Witnesses at my door. The weird thing is none of them live in my small hidden complex and they've only gone to my apartment. How did they know I just moved there and know my name? Does the Post Office sell my information when I put in a change of address?

That's creepy. Did you tell them not to come back? When they come to my door I tell them I grew up as a Fundamentalist and am now a Buddhist so they know I'm a hopeless case.

"The simplest explanation is best." One of them or one of their associates saw you move in or knows you're new there.

Cue "Minority Report" conspiracists, techno buffs, and tin foil hatters....

I had some Mormons come to my place once pretty soon after I moved in and, after convincing them I had my own religion, they asked if any of my neighbors could use "saving." I told them I had no idea - I didn't want to bother my new neighbors.

So, maybe one of your new neighbors thinks you need "saving"

Be careful, they could be casing your apartment. Moving trucks and boxes on the curb are a sure sign new tenants. By knocking on your door and posing as JW they can get a look, albeit brief, inside your place to look for valuable items in plain view. Since your neighbors may not be all that familiar with who you are and who has been helping you move, someone going in or out with boxes might not raise suspicion. Make sure you have changed your own locks, and provided your landlord with copies, to make sure the old tenants don't still have a set.

Or maybe when they ask you about Jesus, you ask them about Allah. That should keep them away.

Sadly, they don't get the message until you are flat out rude to them.
Tell them where to stick the watchtower, if they have been back 3 times they think they are breaking you down.

Most of these people are very nice. Just tell them you're not interested and they will wish you a good day and move along. You can always just not answer the door. I once had Das Williams show up at my door on a Sunday morning, that was far more obnoxious.

Its highly unlikely the Mormon missionaries said that. They don't save people nor ask for for referalls. They simply go door to door teaching about Jesus. Explain to anyone that comes that you don't wish to be disturbed again and they will likely comply.

They work off of a grid. They log which residences have been contacted, which haven't, those that are not to be contacted, etc. and update the grid regularly at meetings.

I had two women at my door claiming they were deaf and looking for households with deaf people in them. These women were dressed casually, were twenty-somethings and had no visible ID displayed.

The woman woh did the speaking did seem to have the sort of voice and cadance one hears from hearing impaired speakers.

I told them to leave immediately. It had a funny feel to it and seemed like a bogus story.

They have lists they work off and watch when new people move in.

Because they do not want to be known for bothering neighbors that know them, usually it is a group from a different area that comes a knocking. You might not have gotten off all of the lists to not contact.

BUT, they feel every 6 months is a good time to re-vist you in case you have changed your minds.

Two of them visited me while I was in my yard last weekend. I told them I practiced the religion of Samba.

They both looked confused and mouthed the word "Samba". Then they asked me what it was about, and I said it was a "dance from Brazil." (I'm part of a Brazlian dance group here in town.)

They asked me if I enjoyed dancing, and I said, "Yes, and dancing is my only religion."

I smiled at them and wished them good day. Confused, they burst into laughter and went on their way.

Basically you can switch out "Samba" for whatever your religion is: beer, Twinkies, needlework...

COMMENT 367506 agree helpful negative off topic

They do not expect to convert anyone. They believe that they are commissioned by Christ to TRY to contact every one in the world and provide the OPPORTUNITY to open a discussion about the the message in the bible. For them, it is the effort that they put forth that counts, not the results. They merely want to provide you with the opportunity to access what they believe is the "TRUTH" of the bible. And it's true that they keep track of who they've contacted and the neighborhoods they've covered. But there's nothing personal about it. Sometimes the "DO NOT CALL" notes don't make it to the "territory" maps that they check out. And before you knock the Witnesses, when Katrina happened, the Witnesses emergency assistance for their members was so effective that the Government and state response agencies pointed all relief efforts towards the Witnesses relief organization because of how well they were organized and how effective they were.
They're hearts are in the right place.

In my experience witnesses are kind and very nice people. I don't mind them because you know what, we live in a world with many religions and different types of people. I am secure enough in my own beliefs. When I travel I enjoy the different customs and cultures our world has to offer. It is the variety of people that make this one dynamic and beautiful world. This is no different in my own front yard. If they are not causing any harm, then why fuss about it? Maybe you can even take the opportunity to connect with another friendly person.

532 very nicely said. So many people are flippant about others' beliefs. I am agnostic but have enjoyed talking with the two JW who have come by my home. We had an open discussion about the human impetus to faith, and the different paths people find. They are polite, respectful and intelligent. I don't feel like making a flippant or disrespectful comment about them and they feel the same way about me even though I do not share their path.

In 1984, my husband and I were making an extensive tour of the Australian continent. We were in a fully equipped Toyota Landcruiser and covered as much territory, as slowly as we could, in the 11 months we were there. It was the trip of a lifetime.

While driving along the southwest coast, we ended up in a very lonely National Park area. We had come in "the back way," approaching from the east. In search of the ranger station, we drove six hours over the red dirt, corrugated road. Bump, bump, bump. The red ridges seemed to go on forever and ever.

Eventually, we found the gate to the ranger's house. On the gate there was a small sign. It read: "No Jehovah's Witnesses." I still laugh, every time I think of that sign.

Unfortunately I have a couple of family members who are JW's and I have had to put with their crazy beliefs for almost 50 years. They are a manipulative group of people.

If they do come to your door, ask them to take you off of their territorial map. Do not get into a conversation with them either and tell them to peddle their pornography elsewhere. Also do not accept any literature. That will be a shoe-in for them.

JW's only take up 1% of the world population and are annoying as nat's flying around your face. They feed on the weak and they are destructive to your well being.

According to a New York Times article, they are the second least educated group in the nation. They do not promote education. They appear as nice people but if you think about it, must cults appear as friendly folks.

Buyer beware as the saying goes.

COMMENT 367604 agree helpful negative off topic

JW's are a cult. They are similar to Scientology in that the church 'Elders' will force members to have no contact with non members of their own family. I knew a family in the 80's where the teenage daughter was ex-communicated and the church told her little brother he was no longer allowed to talk to her. Complete insanity.

I grew up as a Jehovah’s Witness (x20 yrs) and I’ll give my perspective. Returning to your apartment 3x was probably a mistake. It might have been recorded down incorrectly and passed on/misread by the next person. They are not casing the neighborhood or your home in particular; if they are standing around, they are likely regrouping or shooting the breeze. It's not a cult. I left and still have a close relationship with my family who are all JW. When I see them or other Witnesses, I don't feel pressured or ostracized by them in any way. I have a doctorate degree and know of many with similar levels of education or running successful businesses. Although it was not the right fit for me, I think they are generally kind, honest and doing what they feel is their mission. I respect them for trying to make society a better place. Consider this: How you respond to them or others is a reflection on your character, not theirs.

That's pretty creepy, OP. We get them from time to time very early on Sunday mornings (well, I consider 8 a.m. early to be coming around to someone's house on a Sunday, anyway....)

I think it's a huge invasion of privacy to come to my home and try to sell me on a religion and so I'm never happy about it. I either don't answer the door or politely tell them I'm be happy if they'd leave and take me off their list of houses to visit. That works in the short term, maybe for a few months. But then they're back again,

That said, none of them have ever known my NAME. Or at least they don't say my name. I'm curious how they'd know yours. Just when I though they couldn't get more annoying!
