Martin Luther King Day

Martin Luther King Day was celebrated in a big way Monday in Santa Barbara.
And it was quite an historic occasion. 2013 is the 50th anniversary of the "I Have a Dream" speech. And
during the celebration this year, Barack Obama was being inaugurated for his second term as president.
The events started in De La Guerra Plaza and continued with a march up State Street to the Arlington
Theater.
Inside the Arlington Theater the program began right on time at 11AM and ran until about 1:20PM.
The program included dance, music and presentation of poetry and essay contest winners from local
schools.
It also included a video about King's bold move to talk about the US war in Vietnam as a great injustice
that was very much going to be a part of the civil rights movement. This decision was not well received
by many of his own supporters. As history shows, King was indeed a great leader who was ahead of his
time.

After the program at the Arlington Theater, people walked to a free community lunch at the First United
Methodist Church at 305 East Anapamu Street. And yet more music and even some dancing!
