Live-In Ranger
updated: Jan 22, 2013, 7:59 PM

With all the increased panga boat activity on our local beaches and the most recent one discovered last week at Goleta Beach, does anyone know why the ranger no longer lives in the house at Goleta Beach? I've been asking around and people have said its been vacant for the last few years. Is there anyone who patrols the beach at night?

Rangers haven't been living in the various county parks for ages. Cutbacks. Can't afford to provide housing for full time staff to maintain the parks or even provide full time staff to maintain the parks. It's all part of asking our public services to do more with less.

Like the rangers could do something about it...

Hmm. Park hosts. I bet they can be helpful on lots of stuff, but now the beach is a frontline on narcotics trafficking and illegal smuggling of people. Might be time to revisit the resources allocated and not rely on volunteer motor home travelers.

There was a ranger living at Goleta Beach last year but I heard he was retiring.

I don't think that seems like a good idea just to have a empty house there. What about the gang activity we have had there or if an older person gets hurt or needs help. Not everyone has a cell phone.Who cleans up the trash and makes sure that there is no broken bottles or needles or drugs around the area. How about the upkeep of the bathrooms? How about the people you call to reserve the tables? This really isn't safe for anyone. Heck rent out this house and use the money to keep up the beach. Does this mean ther are no rangers at stow park either? How safe is this! Wait until someone sues them.

Maybe the houses in these parks could be lived in by retired people who are still active and they could be available to help out in case of emergencies and report to the Park Service on anything that is needed. In return they could live in the house for free.

So let me get this straight. We do have park staff and they are paid full time or part time. They are living someplace and unless they have bought a home, they are paying rent.

Meanwhile this unit sits empty. It would seem a no brainer that the County could find a qualified park person to stay here rent free or at a reduced rent.

My first rental was cheap because the landlady expected the tenants to take care of the property. Unless it was expensive (like roof repair) we took care of all the problems ourselves. It was a great deal.

@454P, there was a family living at the stow grove "ranger's" home; not sure if they're still there. That's a city of Goleta property and it was an employee of the City that lived there with his family. Presume it and the Goleta Beach "ranger's" house are subsidized for their occupants somehow, but I'm speculating.

Clean up is done by SWAP, Sheriff's Work Assistance Program, basically people convicted of crimes doing community service instead of going to jail. Both of my stepsons did their SWAP at Goleta Beach, one for a DUI and the other for shoplifting. People with serious convictions are not eligible for SWAP.

I did SWAP (Sheriff's Work Alternative Program) at Eilings many many years ago and later learned from the SWAP supervisor at the park that it took more work to get the SWAPies to do the work and supervise them than do the work herself. But it kept people out of jail and that was significant cost savings to the county.

Again.... if you expect government to get by with less we get fewer services, regardless of what the politicians stumping for your vote say.

I was told by the ranger cleaning up at Hendry's that there used to be half a dozen employees who have now been "made redundant" and now there's just him, and he spreads himself over two beaches.............. I don't know if he gets to live in the cool house that fronts the parking lot.

There are houses at all the parks, Tuckers included. Even El Cap used to have one till they mowed it down. Stow Park has always had the live in ranger situation which has kept it decent even when the crabby chick was the ranger. I think the ranger at Goleta Beach s now responsible for going over to Tuckers and checking on it regularly also. They are spread thin. I say move Ranger Dave in at G beach!

When it comes to spending priorities, Parks, although popular, always suck hind tit.

My question is why do the panga boats get this far?? They have to pass the Naval Station in San Diego, the Marines in Oceanside and the Seebees in Oxnard - I am sure all have radar and satellite images. Why isn't the Coast Guard notified? This is just mind boggling? Are we that inept?? That's really, really scarey!!

Hard to pick up a panga boat on radar in the channel. The variation in the ocean surface due to swells is just as big as the height of a panga. Plus they don't have a very big reflective surface. Even with all of the hi-tech equipment, I bet it is hard to catch all of them.

Legalize pot and then they won't have to smuggle it in. Have you ever seen a pothead be aggressive and cause trouble?

I don't know what we can do about the immigrants- they will continue to come as long as the economy in Mexico doesn't provide jobs.
