Photo Safari North

With another photographer friend, Aquaholic and I headed north for several days last week for a photo
safari. Concentrating on Big Sur, Pacific Grove and Santa Cruz areas the weather was simply beautiful to
match the stunning views of this part of our wonderful state.
Some of the areas included in the photos are San Simeon, Point Lobos, Julia Pfeiffer State Beach, Pacific
Grove, Capitola, Carmel Mission, Pigeon Point Lighthouse, Natural Bridges State Park and Walton
Lighthouse in Santa Cruz.

I grew up in the Monterey area, nice memories. Thank you for posting these beautiful images. I can pinpoint them all.. Big Sur's Bixby bridge, colorful beach houses of Capitola, Asilomar and Lover's Point at Pacific Grove. Well done.

What a wonderful vacation with photog friends sharing in the passion for making great images. I am soooo jealous. Love the close up on the sandstone rock: my fave. But I'm most fascinated by the arched rock. I've seen tons of photos of it but can't seem to place it. Would you mind sharing it's location? Thanks.

122 - how can you tell? All digital pictures are "touched" - even coming from the camera, with no post-processing. Check the settings on the camera - "Landscape" is more blue, "Faithful" has more red, and they have various pre-set values of saturation, sharpness, etc.

122 & others - I shoot in what is called RAW format, which means no editing is completed in camera. I work in Lightroom and adjust sliders to varied degrees to "enhance" the image. If the RAW images were not processed they would appear very flat and no detail. All your DSLR cameras shoot RAW and lots of point and shoots also have the ability to shoot RAW. Picture styles are only possible when shooting JPEG which does edit your photos in camera. Thanks for all the great comments. Two different places have the arch rocks - Julia Pfeiffer State Beach in Big Sur & Natural Bridges State Park in Santa Cruz.

If one develops without changing any of the default settings in the camera, then the picture will be developed according to the default settings in the camera. That is, if you have "Landscape" set in the camera, and then download the RAW and develop without changing any of the sliders, then the picture will develop as "Landscape". The sliders provide a means to change the defaults - in big steps or little steps.

164... thank you for pointing out so concisely that there is no such thing as "untouched" photos. Not just digital images either.... film can be pushed during development and prints made from negatives are ALWAYS (unless specifically ordered) processed: saturation, contrast and sharpness with a color shift here or there if needed.

Not to belabor the point about "processing", 're-touched', 'edited', blah, blah, blah.... but who cares really? If an image is pleasing to you, that's great, why get bogged down in the minutiae? Enjoy what you're seeing and appreciate the work that went into creating it, and thank the person posting it for your enjoyment. We haven't even touched on the fact that a camera has the ability to see color and light that we mere humans cannot! Thank you Denise for your amazing work, talent, and eye for the beauty that exists around us all.

Wow, your best ever. And I love that you did not over edit with software to intensify color or HDR the photos to oblivion.
I suggest you make an ibook that we can all buy!! I'd love to hear/read more about your journey with the other photographers. Very neat!

P.S. Just read all the comments re touching/untouched. A photographer is like any other artist--writer, dancer or actor--The best work they produce moves us, but no matter how good it is, it also comes across as natural and effortless.
That is why I love these pictures. You did not over-process them, but you put your stamp on them when you applied finishing touches to RAW files. The temptation to so many is to over-do the editing. It makes images that would otherwise be beautiful appear as if they went through a software blender. The inherent beauty is lost along the way. It's like a powerful play whose stage becomes too crowded with klunky props. It ends up being impossible to appreciate the acting.

6231P.... not to belabour the point but you're not entirely correct. Picture Styles are applied to the JPG file and its preview not the RAW file. When shooting RAW the image you see on the back of your camera is not the RAW file but the JPG preview. This JPG preview will also be the first image you see during download and import but is discarded once the heavier RAW file has been downloaded and converted. Ever noticed how the image changes shortly after import? It's subtle and takes place before the histogram is generated.

116....thank you so much for your comments! I wasn't going to rehash this further on the subject explaining exactly what you wrote....some people just don't get it, which I understand. The best feature one can use when really trying to expose a photograph correctly is a histogram. Of course, this isn't always possible. I prefer when doing any type of landscape scenes to shoot on a tripod using live mode with my histogram displayed. You really can't rely on LCD's screens as the brightness might not be accurate, etc. Unfortunately for my two friends who are Nikon shooters (I'm Canon) they don't have the ability to use a histogram in live mode!

Some wonderful images, Denise. If I had to pick a favorite or two it would be the pastel-colored houses reflected in the water and the sun breaking through the arch in the rock. Where, by the way, are these houses?
