A transient was detained at Butterfly Beach due to suspicion that he started the
fire.

Once again, a vagrant has caused a problem, fortunately- the fire did get too big. How about the "Park Rangers" that the City employ, start PATROLLING THE BEACHES and enforce the laws against camping and deficating on the beaches ...?

This was in the County, not the City. (However, I agree about the need for patrol of city beaches.)

I am glad at least he will be warm tonight. People forget whilst they sit in their fancy warm homes that some people have nothing.

365822 - Yes, I'm sure this transient was just shivering at 11am this morning...it was 71 degrees and sunny. I don't do drugs or drink heavily, I paid attention in school and got a good college degree, and THAT is why I can enjoy my fancy warm home. I feel sorry for very few of our local transients.

How about we raise all our taxes so we can pay for continuous beach patrols? Didn't think so brah.

Guilty until proven innocent. Couldn't have been one of dozens of Butterfly regulars who toss cig butts as they walk around. Could have been a Biltmore Bungalow Bunny. On new years eve I saw at least a dozen people throw butts down, on other days I've seen several each time I go down there. You know for years I've seen those signs all around that say Littering $1,000 fine. Has anyone ever gotten a ticket for littering? Or loitering? We could enforce existing laws rather than reinventing the wheel all the time.

840 - if they raised our taxes for that purpose, I would willingly pay. But - the city fathers would just spend it for more services for the transients. It is time that they started worrying less about the transients and more about the locals.

I'd be happy to patrol the beaches for free part-time. If there was less bureaucracy and liability nonsense we could have a volunteer patrol program, with some limited but reasonable enforcement authority... I'm picturing more a ranger type, picking up trash and checking out sketchy scenes, rather than a beach gestapo. No rights infringed, just a wholesome presence to discourage littering and other unwanted activities. Instant ticket for littering though, no warnings. Anyway, I'm offering.

I think it's fine to call out of control warming fires arson. But I don't know what the laws are concerning warming fires.

ok, ONCE AGAIN- There are plenty of towns where one can rent an apartment for a couple hundred bucks a month. SB is one of the most expensive towns in CA. Personally, I worked in SB and lived in Santa Maria for 15 years before I could AFFORD to live here. Is it fair to have vargrants (from all over the US) running all over our town, sleeping, camping, drinking, selling drugs and hassling locals and tourists on freeway offramps and State St. breaking WRITTEN LAWS ON THE BOOKS in the name of political correctness? NO. I, and many of our community members are sick of this situation. The City Attorney, Steve Wiley, needs to work with the DA and SBPD to ENFORCE the LAWS on the books! The ACLU can go to hell! We need to stand up to these bullies; everyone needs to follow the law or there is chaos-

Throw all the homeless people in jail. That way we can spend $50,000 a year giving them free housing and food. That's what 819 wants, anyway.

I think this fire was arson. This wasn't a fire started at night, and it was very hot out this morning when it started. Ditto with the Elwood fire. Both arson. It seems painfully obvious. And pretty scary!

One of these days a large destructive fire could be started by a transient. I guess then something might be done. It's very scary what is going on here in SB. These fires are started on a regular basis. The enablers have a lot to do with attracting all these folks.

Yeah, and college kids start fires on the beach all the time. Let's not blame any one group before we actually know what truly happened here. For all we know, it wasn't a warming fire. It makes no sense that it was a warming fire. All we have is this thread.
