The Santa Barbara County Fire Department has issued a burn permit to The Santa Barbara County Range
Improvement Association (RIA) to conduct a prescribed burn of approximately 90 acres.
The burn is scheduled to begin on January 22, 2013 at approximately 9 am. The project is
located on the Bar-M Ranch, approximately 2 miles south of Los Alamos. Members of
the RIA will be conducting the burn. The burn has control lines in place that were
created by dozers and graders. Ranch roads also surround the burn area. The Santa
Barbara County Fire Department and The Range Improvement Association will provide
firefighting equipment.
The vegetation to be burned consists of light to medium fuels such as Coyote Brush and
Button Sage. Tuesday's projected weather forecast for the burn area is sunny and 71
degrees with 31% relative humidity. Variable southeast winds ranging from 1 to 5 mph
into the afternoon are expected.
Smoke will be visible from US Highway 101 and some parts of northern Santa Barbara
County. This project is part of a fuels management process and will benefit the local
watershed, wildlife, and livestock grazing areas.
The Santa Barbara County Fire Department has coordinated and assisted the Range
Improvement Association for many years with these types of projects. These burns offer
many training opportunities to Fire Department personnel and help develop positive
working relationships with members of our communities. The burn is expected to be
extinguished by 5 pm.

About time they started burning the area like it was designed to. How else does nature keep itself from becoming overgrown?
