Sunday at the Symphony
updated: Jan 20, 2013, 8:59 PM

Thanks to the largesse of Edhat, a friend and I were able to attend the Sunday afternoon concert of the Santa Barbara Symphony and greatly enjoyed it.

The program included music of the modern Japanese composer, Takemitsu, Mozart and Mendelssohn. Conductor Kabaretti thoughtfully introduced the modern piece, How Slow the Wind, from the podium, and explained its links to the music of Debussy while using several players to demonstrate some of the themes and forms, which was a benefit to those of us unfamiliar with this work.

The Mozart and Mendelssohn were delightful to hear once again.

We are lucky in Santa Barbara to have connections to the wider musical world though the Music Academy of the West.

The soloists for Mozart's Sinfonia Concertante for Violin and Viola, Glenn Dicterow and Cynthia Phelps, are highly acclaimed musicians who happen to be on the faculty. Many thanks to Edhat for the tickets!
