Our family has had a plaque in memory of my Dad at Shoreline, under a tree, for 21
years. The plaque is gone now, but the cement block remains. I called Santa
Barbara Beautiful, but they no longer put plaques in city parks. Any ideas? Should
I get a new one engraved (and where) and put it back in ourselves?
How are city plaques currently maintained?

Bah. I can't post a link unless I pay. Do a google search for Santa Barbara Parks and the Parks and Rec department should be the top link. Select the P&R link and click on the Fall and Winter Activity Guide. There's a section near the front of the PDF titled "The Basics" which has all of their phone numbers listed. I'd suggest trying Parks information at 564-5433 or Administration at 564-5430.

Hope the removal was administrative and not vandalism or metal thieves. If it was bronze, consider contacting the scrap dealers with a description.

I wonder if thieves are less interested in engraved granite, and how the price would compare.

If someone stole it and brought it to a recycle yard i don't think the yard would take it...Call them up and see if they have come across it.

Get a handful of inexpensive engraved plastic plaques from a trophy shop and a tube of silicon caulk, clean the mounting and glue it on. When it looks bad in five years or so, use a putty knife to take off the old one and caulk on a new one. Repeat until no one's left to do it anymore.

Like 636 said, but spend the money for bronze. When you have a legitimate case like this, but dealing with government is daunting, it's better to ask forgiveness than permission. Seriously.

There is a less expensive option for subscribing to edhat, for anyone who cannot afford the 52 bucks. No questions asked...full "privileges" of membership. 13 bucks is not much... buck and 13 cents a month. Then links can be shared.

There was recent repaving going on at Shoreline Park not sure if that might have caused it but there is someone in charge of plaques with the City. His name is Terri Yamada I believe. Contact 805-897-1982 & ask.

We had a plaque made for my husband's mother and her brother. It's on a bench at Shoreline Park. Space was left on the plaque for spouses and children. When grandma died, I called to ask about adding her to the plaque (pretty sure it was Ms. Yamada... sounds familiar) and I was told that there were no provisions for modifying plaques..... and that "no" I could not remove it and modify/replace it myself...... My husband just died a few months ago, and I would love to be able to have his name on that plaque with his mom's....

It often can be better to go directly to the top, especially if, as here, you have gotten less than satisfactory results from the staff. Nancy Rapp is the Director of Parks & Rec.; there's a volunteer-staffed Park & Rec. Commission that meets on the 4th Wednesday at 4pm in the Council chambers in City Hall; those members are appointed by the city council. ... I hope that the city cares enough about its residents to respond helpfully to you.

OP here. Thanks everyone. I did call SB Beautiful and they no longer maintain or make plaques in our city parks. Think I'll try Terri Yamada at parks & rec. and go from there!

My suggestions a) contact SB Beautiful to find out who made the plaques, the of style lettering and spacing and what it cost or b) take a photo of an existing plaque and take it to one of the three trophy shops in SB and see what they can do to reproduce the same size, lettering etc. or (c contact City Parks and get their suggestions. Personally, I would skip contacting City Parks and just take care of it myself via "a" or "b".

The glue that held the metal engraving to the stone of the "old" Santa Barbara Beautiful markers eventually loses its hold and the metal falls away. I believe the new ones are more durable and are certainly better looking. My husband surprised me with a SB Beautiful marker for our 25th wedding anniversary and it is lovely. I choose to comment anonymously because there is way too much senseless nastiness directed towards commenters. "LOOK FOR THE GOOD AND PRAISE IT"

Seriously if you want to get the run around then try and get "permission" from the city or try and get the city (parks and rec) to install another plaque. If you really want it done. Have the plaque made - take it down and glue it on. Relying on SB Beautiful or Parks and Rec is a bad idea.
