Where is the best place to sell authentic Chinese ivory statues and artifacts here in town?

It may be illegal to sell your statues depending on the type of ivory. If it is elephant ivory, you may have to turn it in to the authorities. You can get a better idea by looking at the rules for selling ivory on eBay.

They better be antiques. Trade in newer ivory could get you in big trouble.

Even purchase of older ivory creates market for ivory. The thought of these huge social caring families being decimated for a small portion of their being, seems just awful to me. As a species we have plenty of other baubles to choose from. Maybe you could give them to a museum or someplace where displays of historical practices ard housed?

Try LA. You won't get the severe judgemental treatment Santa Barbarans specialize in.

36, it's not judgment, unless you consider information on international law aimed at protecting a species rapidly approaching extinction "judgment."
I personally would not want to accept money for anything made of ivory. It's like fur coats; it perpetuates the idea of there being value, and therefore incentive, to collect and make high value goods out of animal parts. That being said, Chinese buyers and the African warlords doing the killing are the ones who are decimating the species now. It's unlikely that someone in America selling off antiques will make a ding in the larger global threat. However, it is probably banned by federal law.

Bury them. The ivory trade is very sad and should not be encouraged.

I agree--fur is similar. I donated a fur coat owned by a relative to PETA so they could use it in anti-fur protests.

536: Completely agree. Antiquities often have high value, and trading in them does not impact current species preservation.

Selling of ivories is regulated by U.S. law. You need to know whether its Asian or African and when it was fabricated. For example, Asian ivory made prior to a certain year is not legal to sell. Possess or give away, okay.

Google "selling ivory" to get the full story.

536, the laws in LA will be the exact same here. Yes, it's unethical. But moreso, it's highly illegal and it's one of those things that is so unusual it will be red-flagged and fined in an instant.

This isn't judgmental, it's fact.

They said authentic not antique. And to assume people wont have an intense emotion about ivory...asking for it

Thanks for the responses. To clarify they are indeed antiques past down for generations and I appreciate everyone's help.

Where do I sell all my fur? Just kidding on that last part; couldn't resist.

644, do you eat air? Or meat? How about fish? Plants? How do you know plants don't have feelings when they die?

642: It is apparently illegal to sell antique ivory in California. link. You might want to verify this by researching the actual law and beware of anyone advising you differently about sales.

SBFUNLOVER: There have been many articles recently about the horrific slaughter of elephants. At the present rate, elephants will be extinct by the middle of the century; by 2020, large family groups of African elephants will be extinct. Asian elephants already are endangered from habitat loss and hunting. Brave rangers in Africa are fighting to protect the elephants from poachers and losing their lives to do so, all because of human greed for ivory.

Check out Chait Galleries in Beverly Hills. You will see that they deal in fine ivories. They have a web site.

There are possibly no longer fine shops specializing in what you have in our area.

Don't pay attention to novices who will tell you to bury what you have or that you will get arrested.
