I found this old envelope with a stamp from Santa Barbara's first flight of air mail but the date is unclear. Anyone know more about this?

Go onto the www.usps.com website and they have all the stamps issued, with pictures and dates.

And, in the old days, the Post Office had a book that the clerks could look up all the stamps that were issued. Doubt if they have that anymore and the younger clerks probably won't know anything about that book!!!

Sorry, but that postal website is not very user friendly. I've typed in a lot of different searches and the info is too extensive and will take hours to find this info. Might be easier to call a stamp collector shop. Coin & Stamps shop.

I also tried searching for that special cancellation. Maybe the SB Historical Society might have some info.

George Bliss lived in Santa Barbara. It looks as if he sent a letter to himself in Kansas City.

1936 sounds right to me. Check with Michael Redman at the Historical Museum Library. He might have the information in the Library files.

D8, dating the stamps won't help date the stamp if you follow my drift. The purple "first flight" stamp on the left wouldn't have been a national "issued stamp". It's a one-off made for a single event from a specific location. Hard to tell from the tiny image but it looks like the cancellation is a darker ink than then commemorative stamp. The postage stamps could have been years old at the time.

I think I found a lead with a "first air mail" Santa Barbara google search. The flysba site speaks of Earle Ovington and the first service from SB/Goleta starting in 1936 but it isn't specific about the date. That would probably give enough of a start for someone who wants to put in the time to nail it down.

Stamp collectors often mailed a letter to themselves to get a copy of the stamped stamp.

You might call the airport and see if they have a historian or archivist or "auxiliary" (old folks who remember).
