Thank you for calling the SBWCN. Where, approx. on Cabrillo Blvd was the bird? I'll keep an eye out tomorrow; the WCN is short of volunteers.

why so many sea urchins on the beach..is this a jettisoned load from a fishing boat...sea urchins don't just float up on the beach like that, do they?

I tried Steingarten's try it (however many times) but I am not an Uni eater and have stopped spending the $$. More for y'all. I love sushi and sashimi, but I just don't appreciate /have the taste for uni.

Hope to hear about why the sea urchins are on the beach and hope they were full for the birds!

Those aren't Sea Urchins, looks more like balls of sea weed.

Steingarten's is a restaurant in LA.

Uni is sea urchin when it is served as sushi.

Makes perfect sense, as does the observation of 478 that the urchins were in fact balls of seaweed, certainly the top photo, hard to tell with the second.

My Mom Nancy called SBWCN and then waited an hour and 10 minutes until the person came to get the pelican. SHe was on her bike ride. Not sure of Pelican's status, but here's their info. They are very short on volunteers. If possible and not putting yourself at risk, if you can cover bird with towel and put in box and bring out to them (end of Fairview Mt side), that's the best. Again my Mom was on a bike ride. But she waited. www.sbwcn.org

Thank you, 570P, for reporting back. That was really, really nice of your mom!!! Not many people would wait like that.

I agree, they look like seaweed roots.

570P, please thank you mom for not only calling, but waiting an hour for someone to arrive and rescue that pelican.

Um, not sea urchins.

I stepped on (actually stood on) one once; hurt like hell and the doctor had the dickens pulling all the spines out of my foot.
