Craft Essentials For Lease?
updated: Jan 18, 2013, 2:48 PM

By Edhat Subscriber

I just noticed the building that Craft Essentials occupies has a huge "For Lease" sign on the roof. I hope it's not closing for good. Does anyone know the story?

I certainly hope they're not closing--maybe they're moving?
Art Essentials downtown is the same owner, maybe call and ask there?
Please don't leave Craft Essentials, there's no other local place to buy quilting fabric.

Was there the other day and noticed that many shelves are completely empty of inventory and that the carpet is falling apart.

I asked an employee yesterday ... he said no one has told them anything. The employees were surprised to see the "For Lease" sign being hung up.

Nope, I was there today too and got the same feeling. Lots of emptiness, but other than the "For Lease" sign hanging above the door, no other indication that they might be going anywhere. Not even a sale....

I was also there the other day and overheard the sales people telling the couple in front of me that they were shutting down. Didn't say when...

I've called them and it says that the number is no longer in service. Maybe they are already gone, but you think that they would have had a sale or announcement if they were just moving.

Maybe they're taking the inventory to Art Essentials -- that would explain no going-out-of-business sale.

They are less essential than in 1974?

I heard Folio, that sweet little print shop near where State becomes Hollister is also hanging it up... such a shame.

No, not Folio leaving? This little shop is the best place to go for a gift. Plus, the easiest post office. They are currently offering 15%-75% off, please support this great local store.

I don't mean it unkindly....but the place has looked in shambles for quite a while. And; once when I went in...it smelled like something had died in there.

An awfully big space in this day and age.....

Very sad to see them go--what a loss for SB.

Sad. But like a lot of shops in SB that are independent, it was great when it opened and then quickly went downhill. They never seemed to order anything new, it was all literally the same stuff year after year.

For those of us who are artists or craftspeople or sew or ... well, you know, there's nothing left in Santa Barbara for us any longer. There are wonderful knit shops but nothing for sewers, gotta got to Ventura or Santa Maria. It's hard to believe that we can't support a local store selling these things. Now Michael's is it if Craft/Art Essentials go out and they don't carry anywhere near the kind of things required by serious artists or sewers or... I'm sick, yes I was in both of them this week alone and I have to drive clear across town to go to Craft Essentials, Art Essentials is closer, sure hope they consolidate and stay in business. Buying these kind of things on the internet is just not the same!

Not a good time to take up quilting, sewing, needlework, or building things from wood. Michael's will pick up some new customers looking for what they have now lost. Michael's is great for some things and not so for others. That and it is a chain and the crafts offered show it.

Are there any places left to get large amounts of fabric locally (Not Santa Maria or Ventura?) My daughter likes to make clothes and I make blankets (not quilts) I know there is a quilting store in Buellton, but that's for small amounts of fabric and they're pricey.

Dang! Another store leaving the middle zone around La Cumbre. We have to drive five miles either way to get hardware or house paint, and now art and craft supplies.

In Carpinteria Roxanne's, The Treasure Hunt, is a quilting store; lots of fabric and quilting lessons given. The store is where Charlie Chaplin and Ona O'Neil were married, in front of the fireplace; a judge lived there. Come down, shop, check out our great little museum across the street and have lunch in one of our resturants (good food).

I think Michale's hurt their business. It's hard to run a fabric business. If you want to carry patterns, the pattern companies require such a high inventory and you make very little. Back east crafting is very popular in the winter months. Craft Essentials would take Michaels coupons, I really think it was the large chain store that is taking them down.

Oh, noooo. Say it isn't so! --- This is so sad. I cannot stress enough how much we need to SUPPORT LOCAL BUSINESS! Why is it that there are no fabric stores in Santa Barbara? I've heard this complaint for over a decade now! Can't somebody open one? They'd have the one and only corner on ALL the business!

A whole string of bad news: Folio is one of the more interesting paper-goods shops in SB, with the latest (5PM) Saturday mailing and Craft Essentials has the only local inexpensive fabric and button collection I know of.

I was trying to tell a friend in LA why it is hard to live in a small town. This exemplifies it--choices are so frustratingly limited and therefore limiting.

COMMENT 365300 agree helpful negative off topic

@5252P-- Remnant Store doesn't have clothing or quilting fabrics. They mainly carry home decor fabrics.

Looks like I'm driving to SLO (Betty's), Buellton (Creation Station), or Oxnard (Joann's) for fabric, if I want "local". Otherwise I'll have to buy online.

Stores lament people buying products online, but I don't have time to drive 40-60 miles every time I need something and I find the local store has closed.

The reason we have no sewing stores now is we had several 20 years ago, and they all left: Betty's, Beverly's, and now Craft Essentials. I own a small retail business, and even though we're ok, it's really hard; I'd guess the underlying economics of the fabric industry are just terrible. Not enough affordable merchandise, not enough customers. Everything is pre-made now, and sewing is a "hobby." I grew up sewing my own skirts and dresses, costumes and curtains and bedspreads, and that was normal; now everyone I know thinks that's a special talent, when it used to just be something girls did. I remember when I first saw you could buy pre-made curtain panels in the store, sometime in the 80's, I thought it was really weird. How could you pre-make something that required careful measuring and matching? I'm so stuck in the past, eh. I didn't guess it meant the whole idea of making it for yourself was becoming outdated.

re: folio, i called the store & found out, the good news is they're not going out of business; the bad news is they need to move within the next 3 months (they're looking for a new location) & they won't have the p.o. substation anymore. :-(

No need to drive to SLO for Betty's. They have a great store in Santa Maria. There's a Joann's there too. I do miss the variety we once had. It seems more and more that instant gratification is a thing of the past. Holding inventory is too costly for local businesses.

The official word is we are looking for a new location as our hand has been forced. The USPS contract station will be closing but not sure when. We will need to find a new space before everything is finalized. Thank you for all the nice comments. We sincerely appreciate it. We will make sure everyone knows where we will be heading. Thanks!

Let the rumors cease! This is the official word regarding ART ESSENTIALS and CRAFT ESSENTIALS from the horses mouth. Firstly ART is unaffected and will operate as usual. At Craft we have decided not to renew our current lease...thus the lease sign...Whether or mot we will close or move is being debated as I write. Nothing has been determined yet. We are sorry for all the confusion but if you would like to show your support for us your continued patronage is greatly appreciated. As you know the last several years have been challenging to say the least for many businesses in our community and nationwide. We will post notices here as they are known. And thank you again for all your patronage.

folio and Wootton Printing has found a new home! We will be moving downtown in 4-6 weeks. Wootton Printing will be operational first while folio will need to have the space prepared before it takes up residency. We have been keeping people up to date through our facebook page. Check it out. The USPS contract station will be closing this Thursday, 3/14/13, due to staffing shortfalls. Thank you for all of your encouraging and supporting thoughts. We look forward to seeing you after we have relocated. We will be next to the SB Roasting Company.
