For Ladies Only?
updated: Jan 16, 2013, 8:35 PM

By Edhat Subscriber

Have never been in the Little Town Club - is it just for women? Who knows a little about it? Pictures of the interior? I'm curious, I have lived here decades and never heard very much about it.

Good question. I simply assume one need be rich; I'll be reading these very good articles:

It is not for 'women'. It is for 'Ladies' and has been around for about 100 years
It is also housed in possibly the most beautiful downtown building and garden, architecture by GWS

LOL, for women not ladies everyone! Don't mix those two up!!! The battles the upper middle class chooses to fight are baffling. WOMEN VS LADIES 2013

Best way to sound creepy, add "ladies" at the end of every sentence.

My MIL is a member of the LTC. It's is by invitation only, Ladies are now allowed to wear dressy pants (10 years ago it was skirts/dresses only). They do have events where you can bring your spouse. Yes it helps to have money since you have to pay dues that arn't by any means cheap and then if you eat lunch there you pay for that also. I have been invited my my MIL to a few events there (Tea, Cooking classes, Holiday wreath making etc...) lets just say I was the youngest person there by far! and I'm late 30's. A waiter tried to hit on me once and was promptly fired the next day since my MIL was witness to the whole thing and she was a former secretary of the LTC. It's very old school, classy and you better know your manners and what fork to use.

It's interesting that a "ladies-only" club can exist in this PC world these days.

Can you imagine a "men-only" club being allowed to exist?

There is a men only club...it's called the Cosmopolitan Club and meets at the Elks lodge twice a month.

Reader responses are often what help make Edhat great. The above postings add to what would ordinarily be an informative, but not interactive newspaper article.
Way To Go Edhat readers who are not snarky or bitter.

Resident - try being a girl & joining the boy scouts. There are plenty of boys/men-only and girls/women-only clubs. Some schools are still all-boy or all-girl (colleges, too). Although you have to wonder if it'll be too much longer before those are outlawed! Darn PC people...

After all the trouble the Elks had with their men only membership it is interesting to hear that they continue a club for retirees that is men only. Generally speaking I thought that any facility that was licensed or used services permitted only by state license (such as an ABC permit) had to be open to all persons without racial or sexual discrimination. Anyone have more on this?

Just curious - women (non-employees) are allowed at the gentlemens club of Spearmint Rhino? Little Town Club - would be nice to see interior photos.

I have a friend who was invited to the the Little town Club. She enjoyed seeing the inside, and found everyone friendly, but didn't join.

494P - The Rhino has always been open to anyone of legal age who wants to come in. It serves a need as I'm sure the LTC does. I have no issue with exclusivity anywhere - I goes where I'm welcome (pretty much my jobs and my apartment - it is what it is).

Exclusive club for women only - one must be invited to join.Very "Old Santa Barbara" I've been a guest there several times andlike any private club (women's or men's) it's very nice - genteel - and good food! You haven't heard much about it by design. They keep it very quiet.

The most exclusive club is the Los Alamos Society open only to 49 men--no women. It was founded in 1910 by 49 men and today's membership consists of 49 descendants of Mexican land grant families in Santa Barbara County.

LTC was founded by ladies that were upset because they were not allowed to join the Santa Barbara Club many years ago. The men joined the Santa Barbara Club and their wives joined the LTC. Both are fairly posh clubs. Women are now allowed to join the SBC.
