Police on West Chino
updated: Jan 16, 2013, 5:58 PM

By Edhat Subscriber

There were 4 police cars in the 1600 block of W. Chino Wednesday night around 5:15 pm, does anyone know what is going on?

Wasn't there a protest going on over the issue of granting illegal alien's in California driver's licenses?

The people involved probably know what is going on. Why not call the police department's non-emergency line in the daytime and ask. If it's anything that is relevant to your safety or property values, they'll tell you.

If not, NOYB.

There is no W. Chino. There is a 1600 block on Chino.

The 1600 block of Chino certainly is in the news a lot these days. A search of Edhat archives reveals that this is at least the sixth time in less than two years that police have been called there. Is there a halfway house or something there?

REX. I like how observant you are.

Gang members probably live there.... if they are renters then the neighbors should petition the landlords to make them move. If they own the home that's a lot trickier. This neighborhood (I live just up the street) is moody, there are mostly hard working families that live here but there are also some gang members. I think that they have mellowed out with the police crack down on gangs but there is still quite a bit of danger around here at night.

I would really like to know if it is a SECTION 8 house, which is supported by taxpayers. The Santa Barbara Housing Authority runs THOUSANDS of units in this little town.

I think that's the house where a bunch of tough-looking young guys are often out in the yard drinking and staring at anyone that walks by. I live on Chino but not next to this house, thank goodness. I wonder if landlords care if they have criminal renters as long as they pay the rent? The City could sure use an ordinance requiring landlords to pay a fine if their renters require the police to show up more than once a year to arrest one of them. That's probably unconstitutional but maybe there is a better idea out there.

Can landlords be sued for renters that decrease the quality of life or safety of a neighborhood?

If no one informs the landlords of the incidents, the landlords may well be quite unaware of what is going on. You cannot expect the landlords to drive by everyday at just the right time to see that the police are there. If no one tells the owners, how are they to know? Most landlords care about the houses that they own, and the neighborhoods that they are in.

If anyone really cares - go to or call the city and get the name of the owner of the house address - call them and let them know what their tenants are doing.

This is how things get better.

Hey, we like it over here on in Chinoland! Ask anyone in Santa Barbara, at one time they have lived on this street or have a connection to it! Back in the eighties, someone did a series of beautiful paintings called The Hedges of Chino Street. Can't say that for other streets in town! In addition, I would say people who used to live here then move to Hidden Valley or somewhere, MISS our diversity.

One long long time Chino Street resident was Henry Brandt, look him up, he won a Pulitzer in the early 50s for spacial music. I could name a few more well placed folks, but don't want to blow their privacy.

428 - if by liking Chinoland you mean only in the 80's or earlier...ok. As far as now - move there for a few months and you'll change you mind quick. It's not the same.
You can also research Roger's reports and see how often Chino and the adjacent streets show up...

The 50's was a long, long time ago.

A lot has changed in that hood in the mean time.

Henry Brandt lived on Chino till he passed away a few years ago!

Then Henry didn't win enough money with the Pulitzer to move out of that dangerous neighborhood.

Chino to San Pascual area is currently one of the 2 most dangerous and crime ridden areas of Santa Barbara.

If you live there and haven't noticed and have a nice house, you are Blessed with good luck and peace and my hope is that it will continue for you.

Chino to San Pasqual area, what is that? The streets don't intersect. Sorry, my family has been on the street since the 1970's.
Its like anywhere else that is hit by the ebbs and flows of society and the economy. If Harding School was more highly rated, folks would be flocking here.

452,
I didn't say they intersect.
Chino to San Pascual area - as in the AREA in between them.

Call the PD and ask them if its a crime area. Find the crime maps and 911 calls that list streets which is available online. Search the names of the streets in the adjacent areas and see all the reports by Roger.

I listen to the scanner almost everyday, and there are more calls overall to that area, very late at night, than almost any other. I'm sorry if you aren't aware of it, and I have no bone of contention to that area. I'm simply telling you that for a fact the police are called out there VERY often. As with the other commenter, if you have a good experience there and been safe, I'm glad and wish you well.

I wonder if the activity was at 1617 Chino. If you google image search this address, you will see a 'gang-type' body slamming a little kid. Or so it appears.

Speaking of 1600 block of Chino - there is a registered sex offender at 1623 Chino for "Continuous sexual abuse of a child". This is public record on the Megan's Law website. There are 6 other registrants within less than a mile.

Chino to San Pascual bounded by Mission to Carrillo. You could extend it over to Cliff Drive except that Chino doesn't go that far. The neighborhood on the other side of Mission just gets some incidental stuff from people passing through and when the taggers start to get active.

The City puts the parcel database on the web and you can see the mailing addresses of the owners. None of the properties in the area that is a problem is owner-occupied, although 1617 isn't the address I was thinking of. It is 1618 owned by someone living near Hwy 154.
