I would have to say at this time the best "affordable" criminal attorney is Allen Bifano. He is sharp and knows his stuff. The older crew of lawyers are outrageously priced. But keep in mind sb courts are very crooked and create charges. What do they care it's your $. Anyway good luck your going to need it. Allen Bifano:34 East Sola Street Santa Barbara, CA 93101

William Makler 892-4922 A relative was prosecuted on a serious charge, was ably represented by Bill Makler, and the case resulted in a very favorable outcome. I highly recommend Bill--he's the best in Santa Barbara.

Handles the big cases. More importantly, he wins them.

Third vote for Steve Balash. He has a great relationship with the DAs.

From someone who knows, Bill Duval. Whoever these Steve Balash posts come from, they are either he or his family, or staff. Mr. Balash is 75 years old. You do not want a 75 year old attorney defending you if you are in serious trouble. Mr. Sanger thinks more of himself than anyone else does. Expensive and questionable/mixed results. Whats his name who ran for DA the last time and lost is very good if you actually have to go to trial.

Josh Lynn was the DA that lost the election. And its too bad now we have that worthless DA dudly chasing down people for smoking pot. She does not follow state law or the measure P ordnance we voted for and uses taxpayer $ to waste the defendants $ until they have to give up the fight. That is not justice. Its a scam because you are broke before you can win. When she is up for election I will make whoever is running against her a very nice website free of charge and help with the campaign anyway I can. She is not what we voted for. Shame on her!!

I think Landheer and Mackler are both excellent. Steve Balash does have a great reputation for winning cases, so the person who posted for Duvall and slammed him for being 75 is just plain rude and probably jealous. Duvall has got to be in his mid to late 60's, so he's no spring chicken either. But I do think he's gotten a face full of dust from Balash and Landheer over the years, and that explains the "hate". I agree that the public defender is often the best choice - they have some amazing legal minds in that office. And I also agree that it's a crying shame Joyce Dudley won the election. She is a shameless self promoter with a ridiculous agenda. She's not very bright, so her narcissism will most likely bring her down in the end. Josh Lynn is smart and now he's a criminal defense lawyer, but I think the DA might hammer away harder on you if he represents you than if one of the others did. That sounds petty, but that also sounds like something Joyce Dudley would order and her deputies would carry out. I work in the system and have for many years, but I have no affiliation with any of the layers mentioned above. Just my honest opinion about things.

I'll speak up for Allen Bifano. It's desirable to have someone relatively young and aggressive. The criminal law, particularly, changes and he's capable. So is Josh Lynn, but I would agree with 907P and Dudley's vindictiveness.

As for Balash handling the big cases, maybe so, but as for winning: he just handled/represented Adrian Robles in the Simpson murder, and the jury came back with a guilty verdict almost immediately.

DA Dudley is all about winning convictions to further her political career, and not about justice. She isn't capable of understanding what real justice means. As a prosecutor she was not respected by anyone, especially the judges and the other lawyers.

I needed to find the best criminal lawyer in town for my son who got in trouble when he was at UCSB. He'd never been in trouble before. It was a mess. I didn't know where to turn. My friends gave me recommendations. But I ended up calling the Santa Barbara Bar Association. They referred me to an attorney. I interviewed five lawyers, including some of the best mentioned here. I hired the Bar's suggestion and he was so excellent. I wouldn't have foound him on my own.

I used Bob Sanger. Fought my case for a year and 70k later i pretty much was sentenced to the same amount of time had i had a "public pretender!" I received 6.years in prison but i probably had no chance from the beginning being that "Elvis " Perlin was the DA and i was the first high profile case for the newly elected Brian hill!

I needed an attorney, asked friends, got Mr. Bifano's name. He was wonderful. Took care of everything, knew all the players and how to keep things moving. I was a deer in the headlights, and he gave me peace of mind. Polite, listens, but can be tough when it counts. He needed to remind a prosecutor of a deal that was made earlier, and made sure it was done.
Thank you Allen!

I have no agenda whatsoever in this dialogue and have worked in law enforcement in this town for almost 30 years.

If you have need and qualify, the Public Defenders in Santa Barbara do an excellent job. They are conscientious, they cares and they are salaried public employees who work tirelessly every day protecting the rights of the under-represented, despite ongoing budget cuts and lack of staff. If you can afford high dollar representation you can't get these diligent and talented attorneys, but if you do qualify for their services, you can't do better!

Robert Landheer is an excellent choice, he has a lot of respect in the legal community and good connections (which unfortunately matters a whole lot). He really invests himself in his cases and actually cares about his clients more than most lawyers do. Going with a public defender can work out well, but it is a gamble. Jennifer Archer is a public defender and is very good at her job and will do as much as she can for you. The problem is that you do not get to choose if you go for a PD and run the risk of ending up with a complete dump truck of a lawyer who will not even try to work on your case and throw you to the dogs.

Roger Lytel does magic for criminal defense law! Had trouble with friends during Fiesta and he got all the charges dismissed for everyone on our end. He came highly recommended for knowing and manoeuvering throught the legal system, finding loop holes and getting people walking papers. Just google him and read the reviews.

I practiced criminal defense here for over 30 years. Did very well in large part because I was a police officer before becoming a lawyer. Many of the names mentioned are lawyers that I know and praticed with and they all have particular expertise. The best advice posted on here so far is to disclose the nature of the offense or offenses being alleged and the referral should then take that important fact into account.

Avoid Adam Pearlman and Tara Haaland-Ford at all cost. Pearlman is a hustler who charges ridiculous amounts and usually doesn't show up for court. Most of his cases are IV kids who get caught for DUIs, open containers, drunk in public, and other things of that nature, but what he does is says he can get you classes or some type of diversion to get the charge dropped or reduced. The thing is that these options are offered to everyone, so pretty much your out atleast a thousand dollars with literally no work having to be put in on his part. Haaland-Ford on the other hand is just horrible, she is dull and does not seem to be respected by her colleagues. I have used her multiple times and she has never done anything to make my case better, and in some cases she even makes it worse.

Bill Makler, Roger Lytel & Darryl Genis are the three busiest criminal defense attorneys in the SB courthouse. Genis mainly does only DUI and is outrageously expensive. Makler & Lytel do it all in terms of variety of criminal law cases in Santa Barbara County, but Roger Lytel is more reasonable and affordable; also he is known to be hands-on and personable. If you have a high profile trial and can afford Dennis Merenbach, he also is excellent.

Caution: Many of these referrals seem like promotional ads & likely written by the law firm staff. Any of these referrals that include PHONE NUMBERS of the actual lawyer are suspicious. Really, they just happen to have the office number handy? Caveat Emptor (Buyer Beware).
