Tap Water Smell
updated: Jan 13, 2013, 1:00 PM

Anyone else have swampy-smelling tap water? In our house (downtown
SB) it's gotten quite noticeable over the past day or so. I don't know if this is
a problem with our house, or just the nature of the water coming from Lake
Cachuma. Any ideas?

I remember they were asking everyone to conserve water the last few days because they were putting in a new ozonation machine at one of the drinking water facilities that serves SB. It could be related to that somehow.

I noticed the whole area from the Mesa down to the waterfront had a swampy smell. I just smelled my tap water in the bathroom - Yup! it smells like swamp! I'm on the Mesa. I wonder if it's true or I am under the power of suggestion?

They are working on the water system this weekend in SB, so I'd be aware, it's probably diverted from somewhere else as they are not producing drinking water at the Cater plant.

The good news is the work at Cater water treatment plant is only going to make the water better once they finish.

SB city has gone to its wells to replace the water normally coming in from Gibraltar. The wells are stinky but potable,

I "always" have water that seems to have so much chlorine in it that it burns my eyes as if I were in a jacuzzi :( Really hoping that the "ionization" will cut down on the need for using so many harmful chemicals in our "drinking" water !

@ 363228, yes the "Gas Land" film IS scary. Especially the scenes of folks lighting a match near their kitchen sink and having fire come from their faucet! Pulling the natural gas out of the earth via chemicals and water infusion is a secretive process. I'm uncertain of what regulation is required. With their violation record, I hope Greka Oil in Santa Maria is not fracking. It's seems silly to state the obvious, but once you've contaminated one's water system, one's health starts to deteriorate. Then come the illnesses, and then the lawsuits.

that's the scariest part though, there is NO regulation on fracking. They don't even have to declare the chemicals they pump into the ground on the basis that it's a "proprietary trade secret"
